UNITED ACTION.
NORTH ISLAND MEAT* EXPORT, Mr. W. D. Lysnar, of Gisborne, who has been actively interesting himself, on behalf of. the New Zealand meat export trade, with special reference' to the methods in vogue of handling frozen meat shipments upon their arrival in London, is hot lighting the battle of the exporters single-handed. During tho course of a conversation which a representative of Thf. Dominion had with Air. W. G. Fester, the executive head of the Wellington Meat Export. Company, Ltd., that gentleman stated that au understanding had been reached among the North Island companies, which had for its object tile stricter supervision of the New Zealand meat export trado at the London end. It had been agreed by those concerned that the interests of the trado required tho presence in England of a highly-paid representative commissioner, veste<l with extensive powers. Certain of the big exporting companies already had representatives in London, but it was felt that tho.maiiy interests of the trade as a whole demanded the exereiss of a general supervision by a. representative commissioner appointed by tho meat companies, and accredited with ample authority to act as ho saw fit in cases where the interests of the industry wero in danger of being jeopardised. The question of a representative appointed by tho Government - had been raised, but rejected, as it had been recognised by all concerned that the meat companies must work out their own salvation. In replv to a question, Mr. Foster did not consider that the recent announcement that, certain of the European countries—Switzerland and Austria, for example—had opened their doors to foreign meat, would affect the New Zealand export trade. "Our meat -is too good for them," ho said, adding that London was the best, market for the New Zealand exporter. In nny case, ,ho said, the removal of the European restrictions upon imported meat was only temporary.
