CIVIC ROLL AND LABOUR.
MARKED ACTIVITY. Following upon tlie organising endea* vours of tho local Trades Council and' affiliated bodies some 500 names liave been already added, to the municipal roll. It is generally accepted, however, that this is only a small beginning and that the labour activity will eventually result in adding thousands :of names to tho roll. Questioned yesterday, Jlr. E. J. Carey, president: of tho Trades Council, declined to hazard an estimate as to:the number of voters likely to be enrolled under Labour auspices or ( as to the result of the extended franchise. "We are not troubling about tho political creed- of those enrolled," he remarked. "We know," he continued, "that the most effective part of a political campaign is the enrolling of voters in the first place and getting them to the poll afterwards, but we ask no questions as to thn' political creed of those whom wo enrol.' : Six candidates, Mr. Carey stated, will be-selected at the Labour party meeting on Wednesday next. At its meeting last week the party decided to accept Messrs. D. M'Laien, M.P., and A. 11. Hindmarsh as' two of the eight candidates to be run. There are sixteen aspirants for the six vacancies remaining. Phe roll, Mr. Carey remarked, had been brought down by purging from about 31,000 to less than 17,000. ° All the efforts of the '• Labour na'rty and other enthusiasts would scarcely make the new roll equal to' its predecessor in point of numbers.
The wisdom of ordering ' Summer Clothes now will bo apparent after ar inspection of the specialities for midsummer shown at Jlilligan's Tailoring Warehouse, in Kelburne Avenue,
