OLD SOLDIERS ENTERTAINED. (By Telegraph—Special Convißpondent.) Palmcrston North, January 20. llr. R. S. .Abraham's motor-car, which was run into the Mangaonc stream a few flays since, has been raised out of the, deep channel into which it fell, and has been found to be damaged to the extent of about .£1(10. -Mr. Ci. Craw, who was with 111-. .Abraham when the car went over the bank, and who sustained a fractured rib and other injuries is progressing favourably.

The veterans of Palmcrston were entertained at the Municipal Pictures last night by the Mayor (Mr. J. A. Nash). Among the pictures shown was a series of films taken at the military tournament, including a splendid view of the veterans themselves being inspected by General Godley, and, needless to say, they thoroughly enjoyed the entertainment. They were afterwards entertained by Mr. H. B. Tucker, of the Club Hotel. Mr. C. G. Shortt, of Palmerston, has been appointed enumerator for Palmerston for the census to bo taken on the borough in April next. The Eev. A. Doull, of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, who has been spending a holiday in the north, returned to Palmerston yesterday. • Councillor F. Mov.-lcm, who has also been in the north since the bowling tournament, returned heme yesterday. Mr. Peter Bowling gave an address in the Oddfellow's Hall last night, when there was a fair audience. The greater portion of his address dealt with the part which he had played in connection with the Newcastle strike. Be received a rote of thanks. The annual meeting of the Palmerston Working Men's Club is to bo held next Thursday. .The club is in a strong financial position, having between nine hundred and a thousand members. The, newly-formed Motor-Cycle Club intends 'to make every effort to prevent I'eeldess or excessively fast riding on the part of its members. It is understood that the police, at the request of the Borough Council, also intend to keep a sharp C3'o cn this matter. ilr. \Y. E. Barnard,' deputy superintendent of the Palmerston Fire Brigade, has been appointed to represent the brigade at the Annual Fire Brigades Conference, which 'is to be held in March at Hokitika. At the Police Court to-day, before Mr. A. D. Thomson, S.M., a man named Charles Lee was convicted and sentenced to three months' imprisonment for stealing a suit of clothes belonging to Charles Phillip, a horse dealer. Accused took the clcthc? from a hotel where the owner was lodging, while he was away at Woodville, and disposed of a portion of them 'to a second-hand dealer.

The Maunwatu District Scout Committee hold its first annual meeting last evening in the Mayor's room at the Council Chambers, Mr. M. A. Eliott, District • Commander,- being in the chair, while there were also present: The Mayor '(Mr. J. A. Nash), and Messrs. W. F. Durward, E. D. Hoben, Chief District Scoutmaster Stagpoole; -Scoutmaster Paltridge, and Serjeant-Major Gill. The following. oiticers were elected:—District Commander, Mr. M. A. Eliott; District Secretary, Mr. T. Stagpoole; • D.1., Dr. Peach, It was decided to recommend Scoutmaster Paltridge luid Sergeant-Major Gill for positions in the Central Troop v and two scoutmasters will be elected at the uext meeting of the committee on February 0. Messrs. J. A. Nash, ~\Y. Rutherfurd. AV. P.- Durward, E. D. Hoben, and Dr. Martin were appointed a Citizens' Committee. The chairman made complimentary reference to the good work done at the Military Tournament by the scouts, and the Major referred tothe excellent service of. Mr. M. A. Eliott as District Commander, and hoped that he. would see 'his way to long continue in - that position.
