ATTEMPTED THEFT. Two fruit-hawkers, .named Robert Gordon and Walter Thomas Miles, wero placed,in the dock together and. charged with attempting to commit theft of J!3 in money, the property of Fook Gem. Each accused pleaded not guilty. Gordon also pleaded not guilty to assaulting a Chinaman > named She Cliong, bfit admitted a charge of drunkenness. Miles pleaded guilty to being found drunk, and to procuring . liquor during tho currcncy of a prohibition order. Evidenr.o for the prosecution was to the effect that Gordon and Miles went together to Took Gem's shop in Molesworth Street and took some fruit without paying for it. She Cliong was in charge at the time, bnt another Chinaman was in the yard. Gordon attacked Sho Cliong, and Miles attempted to burst open tho till, but the other Chinaman rushed in and both accused fled. Neither Gordon nor Miles gave evidence, and tho magistrate held that 011 'the evidenco each must be convicted. Both had bad records, and a sentence of a month's imprisonment was imposed. For drunkenness, Gordon was lined Ss;, with the alternative of 21 hours' imprisonment, and on tlio charge of assault he was fined '10s., in default 11 days' imprisonment. Miles was convicted and discl.-rrged for drunkenness, and, for breach of the prohibition order ho was Kncd 405.. in default; seven days' imprisonment. A TERRITORIAL IN TROUBLE. Joseph I'ercival IJevcll, a young man and ft member of tho Territorial Forces, pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing from the ICarori camp 011 January 18 a white tunic, a pair of trousers, a service cap, and a belt value .£3. tho properly of tlio Wellington Guards. Accused also pleaded guilty to theft on January 21 at Wellington, of three rifles, value <£11, tho property of tho New Zealand Government. 011 the application of Chief-Detective Broberg, Revell was lcmandcd until I his morning l'or sentence. OTHER CASES. Ross Taylor was charged with drunkenness, aud with theft of a swag value 405., Hie property of some person unknown. Accused admitted the charge of drunkenness, but stated that he knew nothing about the swag which had been found iu
his possession. On the charge of drunkenness he was lined 5s. t in default !U hours' imprisonment, and on the other charge he was remanded until this morning, *o that inquiries might bo made as to the owner of the swag. Archibald Cooper, appearing oil roinaii'.l, charged wifh usinK threatening behaviour, whereby a broach of tlio peacc was occasioned. Alter hearing tho evidence, tho magistrate held that it was not sufficient to convict and the information was dismissed. Mr. J). Jackson appeared for the defence.

William Barker, chargad with drunkenne?«, wa? remanded until February for Hicdicnl treatment. Leyshon Williant>, for drunkenness, was fined 10s., in default •18 hours' imprisonment. Five first-offend-ins inebriates wero fined 5=., with the alternative of 24 hours' imprisonment.
