A sensational' drowning fatality occurred on Coogec IJcach to-day.' Six women and five men, while bathing ill the surf, were carried out to sea. When the bathers ventured' into tho water which had boon mado" dangerous by tho channel, they were quickly carried out to sea. Tho rescuers (lid excellent work. Harold Baker was .{specially prominent, saving several lives though hp was fully dressed. Ono of the victims was brought to shallow water and told to mil to tho beach, but, seized with fear, fell down and was taken out again by the, undertow and drowned. One- woman struggled so with her rescuers that ono of them was forced to strike lier to avoid further hindrance. UNCLAIMED. CLOTHING. FOUND. (IJec. January 30, 0.30 a.m.) Sydney, January 29. It is believed a fifth man was drowned at Coogce, as unclaimed clothing has been found on tho rocks, Coogco is one of Sydney's most popular seaside resorts. It is situated on tho ocean beach, ii few miles south of South Head, and is only half-an-hour's tramride from tho city. It has a fino beach, and is a popular daily , resort for thousands ot' surf-bathers. On fino holidays and Saturdays and Sundays tho number of visitors to Coogee runs into five figures. Drowning accidents are comparatively rare.
