■? LABOUR MATTERS. It may bo mentioned that with the exception of a single year Broken Hill has had a Labour Mayor.

Talking about the mines and miners at Broken Hill, Mr. Wright remarked that industrial peace was now assured for a period of four and a half years. This is the term of an agreement niado this month by the men and their employer's. Under the agreement labourers arc to receive 9s. (id. per day in wages and mechanics 12s. Cd. Tho miners will continue to work on "tonnage," a system of piecework. Tho only union not participating in the agreement is that of tho engineers and firemen which is seeking the aid of the Federal Arbitration Court.. Personally. Mr. Wright remarked, ho was opposed to piecework. Theoretically it worked all right, but when things were very had the employer got men to accept a rato of wages they would never consider if they were working on wages.

Mr. Wright intends to spend a holiday of some weeks in the Dominion. Ho will leavo Wellington in a day or two for Rotorua.
