Mr. Fielding, Minister for Finance, has niado an important announcement in tho Houso of Commons regarding tho tariff reciprocity arrangements with tho United States. . Wheat- and other grains, dairy products, fresh fruits, fish, eggs, • poultry, cattle, sheep, and vegetables. aro to bo reciprocally free under tho two tariffs. Canada is to. placo on her freo list cotton-seed oil, and the United States free list will include lumber. Canada will removo the restrictions on tho exportation of .pulpwood and raw materials, and mica, gypsum, etc., are to bo mado free. The rates on secondary food products are to bo reduced, as aro also those on an extensive list of manufactures. : Canada will lower her tariff on agricultural machinery. MESSAGE BY THE PRESIDENT. A CEMENTING OF FRIENDSHIP. (Rec. January 2S, 0.30 a.m.) New York, January 27. President Taft's message to Congress expresses tho belief that a reciprocity agreement will materially reduce the cost of living in tho United States, and emphasises that the United States friendship with Canada will bo drawn closer on tho tightening of tho commercial bonds. The financial gain is not tho only result to bo attained.
Mr. Taft says finally "Canada has cost us nothing in tho way of preparations for defence against her possible assault, and sho never will. Sho has sought to agree-with us quickly when differences have disturbed'. our relations. "•
STRONG OPPOSITION EXPECTED. New York, January 26.
It is stated in Washington that strong opposition is likely to develop against ratification of the reciprocity agreement, the principal opponents being Now England , representatives, who believe their interests to be threatened.
