February I.—Nelson Regatta. February 9.—Christchurch Eegatta (Lake - -Forsyth). February 18—Wellington Eegatta. February 25.—Championship Eegatta Wanganui,
A hitch ,has occurred in the preliminary arrangements of the match between Dick 'Arnst and Harry Pearce for the world's championship, which have been in train in Sydney of.late. Arnst is ready and willing, but Pearce is meeting with great trouble in raising the necessary stakemoney. This shows very emphatically the respedt in which the champion is held when even the Australian champion cftnnot find backing .in his own country. Even Mr. Seifert, of Manawatu,-. who supplied the sinews of war for the Australian in his recent race with Webb, seems diffident at flying his man . against tho higher game—and ono cannot help thinking he is right. ■ ' ' The programme for Christchurch Regatta, for which entries close on .February 1, is as follows:—Senior- Fours, two miles, prizes .£2O and £3; Youths' Doublo Sculls, one mile, ,£6 and £2; Maiden Pours, one mile, JEIO and ,£2; Junior Doublo Sculls, one mile, .£8 and .£2; Senior Pairs, one and a half miles, £S and .£2; Youths' Fours,. ono mile, .£lO and. £2; Maiden Double Sculls, one mile, £1 and £2; Junior Pours, one and a half miles, i£l2 and £2; Senior Doublo Sculls, one and a half miles, £S and £2. The three senior events aro in best and best boats, tho others in Association clinkers, and the above is the order of the programme.
The Star Boating Club has received a decided reinforcement to its ranks in the person of E. E. Fitzor, the well-known Canterbury Club oarsman, w ; ho has been removed to this city, and who has joined tho S.B.C.
The .Viotorian Rowing Association is pushing a schemo to send an eight-oar crow to the Olympic games. The cost of sending twelvo men to Norway, where the raco will be rovedj would be about 321800. It is believed tlfero will be little difficulty in raising the money. The senior division of the Star Club's double- sculling event has now reached its final stages. The two crews left in are R. M. Brewer and W. Robertson, and J. Bennett and H. Lawson. In the semifinals the latter duo defeated 0. E. Bridge and H. "Wallace rather comfortably in a raco in which they led throughout, and in which they gave a good display of bright, well-combined sculling, and never gave their heavier opponents a chance. If the final is still undecided by. the time this appears in print, it would mako an excellent side-show for the club's annual swimming sports,, which aro' down ■ for settlement this afternoon. Each of the crews is sculling very nicely, and the performance of each in the heats, would appear to foretell a close race. As wo know, there is a charm. in variety which is sometimes absent in a swimming sports gathering ,and here is just the chance..
