IMPROVEMENTS EFFECTED. REDUCED COST MAY LEAD TO LOWER RATES. LAND-LINE SECURED. By Telegraph-Press Association-Copyright. (Rec. January 25, 10.50 p.m.) Sydney, January 25. ' Mr. Milward, manager for tho Pacific Cable Board in the Pacific has returned from a visit to Canada. Ho says the' Board now controls a Mine of communication from Australia to Montreal, and ,has effected on installation which will enable the dispatch of cables to be expedited by twenty-five per centum—in other words, tho cable will bo able to deal with twenty-five per cent more, business in a given time. Mr. Milward's mission to Canada was for tho purpose of installing apparatus and taking over for the Board a line previously leased.from the Canadian-Paoinc telegraphs. The Board can now carry messages over 6100 miles with only one land line. The old system required three handlings. . : . Asked if the innovation was likely to lead to a reduction of. rates within a reasonable tirno Mr. Milward said it placed the Board in ii bettor position by reason of the reduced cost. The present weekly average of' the Pacific line was 42,000.w0rd5. This was showing a marked and continuous increase, and it, was conceivable that if the Board increased the carrying capacity of the cables to a large extent, and the public supplied sufficfe'nt business, the rates might be affected. Referring to the All-Red route Mr. Milward declared that it'would'.obviously ba an advantage to have a cabla right through. The Atlantic cables at the present timo were practically controlled by American capitalists. .
