TOBACCO DUTY.
'AN AUCKLAND GRIEVANCE. (By Telegraph—Special Correspondent.? Auckland, January 25. Representations are being made to thai Minister for Customs by some, local tobacco merchants concerning an aspect of the Customs duty, which it is claimed: is inequitable. If tobacco is taken out of! bond and is found to be damaged and! unsaleable no refund is made of the duty! paid on it. A case is cited in which am Auckland tobacco merchant took 12,101 V cigarettes out of bond. They were found' to have deteriorated on the voyage, and: the firm applied to the Customs; Department for permission -to have thorn re« turned to bond and destroyed, and to; take a similar quantity of good cigarettes! out duty free. This was refused, and the Department has taken up the same atti-l tude in respect to other similar cases that! have occurred locally. Tobacco merchants! object to paying duty on goods which! have to be destroyed, and. contend thatj thero should be provision for a refund iaij such cases. '."-■.
