The Hon. E. M'Kenzie leaves very shortly for a visit to Auckland district. . Mr. John O'Shcai City Solicitor, who has ljccu in Australia for a month past,, returned yesterday. Hβ .toured with the New Zealand teachers' cricket team, and participated in many of the games. Hβ was accompanied by Mrs. O'Shea. It is stated in insurance circles in this city that Mr. C. 51. Montefiore, who is now in Sydney, has been appointed general manager for Australasia of the Ocean Accident Company, the former holder of the position having resigned. It is also stated that Mr. H. N. Liardet, who has been acting ns manager of the New Zealand branch during the absence of Mr. Montefiore, lias been confirmed in the position. Mr. John Barr, sub-editor of the Sydney "Bulletin," and president of the New south Wales Journalists' Institute, arrived, from Sydney by ' the Moeraki yesterday on holiday leave. Mr. Barr was formerly a Wellington journalist, , and, after leaving New Zealand, was connected for some years with the literary staff of the Sydney "Daily Telegraph. Professor T. H. Laby, of the Chair of Physics at Victoria College, who was a delegate to the recent meeting in Sydney of the Australasian Association for the Advancement of Science; returned to Wellington, by- the Moeraki yesterday. Mr. H. Horton, one of tho proprietors of the "New Zealand Herald," Auckland, is at present on a visit to. Wellington. Mr. G. H. Barnes, representing Messrs. J. and N. Tait, arrived from Sydney yesterday in advance of tho Amy Castles Concert which commences a tour of tho Dominion at Dunedin shortly. Mr. W. Crighton, architect, of AVcllington, accompanied by Mrs. Crighton, are at present visiting Napier. Tho Bey. H. S. Woolkombe, who recently visited New Zealand in. tho interests of the Church of England Men's Society, was laid up when he reached Secunderabad, in India, with a strained heart, resulting from over work, and was ordered by the doctor to take a complete rest for three weeks. He returned to Bombay in compliance with his doctor's orders. This attack was so serious that Mr. Woollcombe was obliged to cancel all his engagements in Madras, including a big mass meeting for men. Mr. E. C. Gannaway, Assistant Postmaster, was a passenger to Lyttelton last evening by the Maori. Ho is proceeding to' Invercargill to relieve the chief postmaster there, who is on annual leave. At the meeting of the Dunedin City Council last night, Mr. Lewin, of Lyttelton, was appointed, town clerk, in succession to Mr. E. W. Eichards. There were 38 applicants for the position, which carries a salary of ,£GOO per annum. Mr. Lewin was born in 1867 in Lyttelton, being a son of the. late Pilot Lewin. 11l 1896 he ,was elected a member of the Lyttelton Borough Council. In 1899 ho was appointed town clerk and treasurer to the Borough Council, and has done excellent work in these capacities. Ho has taken an active interest ill local affairs. Ho was at one time a first-class oarsman, and was secretary of tho local Eegatta Committee for a nuoiber of years.—Press Association. Mr. Thomas Marshment, of 70 Adelaide Eoad, a resident of .Wellington, for nearly 40 years, died at the hospital on Tuesday, aged. 60. The late Mr. Marshment, who was a native of Wiltshire, England, leaves a widow and ten children, five sons and five daughters. Amongst the arrivals the Athenic yesterday was Mr. B. A. Heinemana, of Johannesburg (son of the late Dr. Heinernann). After spending two or threo \weeks in Dunedin, he will proceed to England, via panada and the United States, and will subsequently return to Johannesburg. '■> ' ; Mr. Eobert T.
