A'counter-petition against one in favour of forming Otaki into a borough is in courso of circulation,-but, it is reported, is not meeting with as much success as. the rival petition. ■ 1 Heavy rain fell here on Monday, and will have a beneficial effect on pastures.. It was ba'dlv needed, although, of course, it has interfered with haymaking operations. • Tho monthly meeting of tho Road Board,- which was to have been held on Saturday afternoon, lapsed for want ot ; quorum, only Wardens Judd, Jones, and Rolls attending. ! On Sunday some Maori children wero responsible for firing a large area of country near tho Otaki sanatorium. Tho grass, in places burned briskly, but, fortunately, several men were near the scene, and tho fire was extinguished without harm being done. A movement is on foot to form a lawn tennis club at Otaki Gorge. 'Mr. . Olphcrt is the primo mover. A sharp shock of earthquake was felt here yesterday morning at 5.15 o'clcck. A man'named Moore was arrested yesterday on a charge of vagrancy. He was sentenced to seven days' imprisonment.
