(By Telegraph—Special Correspondent.) • Auckland, January 10. • The fact that free goid is showing in 'tho small stringer cut in the tunnel being put in by the five companies interested.in the Thames flat is very important,' as it gives good reason to hope that if any of the knowu rcsfs are met with, and the tunnel at IOCO feet is proceeded with, they will be found to carry the gold down to that depth. It is estimated that the Cardigan No. 2 lode'should bo met with'in •the vicinity of the boundary between the May Queen and Saxon mines, and that is no doubt tho reason tho latter shares have advanced in price. In connection with the gold being, seen in the small stringer, met with at 10C0 feet in the southern end of the field, it is of interest to recall the fact that some years ago bores were put down at the northern end, with the result that excellent country was brought up in the cores at I<CO feet, which, when assayed, showed a value of about 14s. per ton. There is thus evidence of the existence of gold at both ouds of Thames flat, which augurs well far tbo future of.the development of the deep levels, by means of the combined crosscut now .being put in.
