« • INQUEST AT THE HOSPITAL. PETONE BATHING FATALITY; The City Coroner (Dr. A. M'Arthur, S.M.), held an inquest at the hospital yesterday afternoon concerning the death ■' of Albert Chapman Monkhouse, the vie-' ■ tim-'of the bathing" fatality at Petone on 1 Saturday. Sergeant. Mathieson representi ed tlis police. The evidence was on the lines of "the report published in yesterday's issue. It appeared that deceased, when removed from the water was conscious,'but afterwards, became unconscious. Dr. Simpson, senior resident surgeon at- Wellington,. Hospital, stated that, when the deceased, was admitted to the hospital on Sunday , afternoon he was • paralysed from the ~ neck downward, his face was livid, and he was quite unconscious. Death occurred about twenty minutes after admission, and was caused by fractured dislocation of the neck. A verdict was returned, in accordant, with the medical testimony. - , .. MOTOR-CAR ACCIDENT. Auckland, January 9. .... Dr. T. Hope Lewis was severely injurcd in a motor-car accident this afternoon. His car collided with a tram- . car and he was thrown on the front of the car i-nd fell heavily to the ground. His condition late to-night was fairlj; satisfactory. ■' ' STAFF OFFICER'S DEATH. ' Invercargill, January 9. Staff-Sergeant-Major Graut died after a brief illness on Sunday. He was operated upon for appendicitis the previous day, and never rallied. Deceased; who had: made all arrangements to attend the in- t structional camp at Wellington, had • served in the South African war. He ' leaves -a widow and one son. ' FOUND HANGING. Greymouth, January 9. John Bennington, aged 30, a single man and a plumber by trade, was found hang- i ing by the neck to a beam -in Kettle Brothers' cartshed this morning. DEATH FROM SUNSTROKE. Gisborne, January 9. • James Wall, barman, who was seized . with sunstroke whilst bathing yesterday, . died this morning. He was a native of .Melbourne. ' FOUND DROWNED. Timaru, 'January 9. ' At the inquest on Thomas Lack, whose body was found in the harbour yesterday. a verdict of found drowned was re. . turned! AKAROA COACH OVERTURNED.. Christchurch, January 9.
