ISLAND MISSIONARY DEPORTED.

——-t — ; AI/LEGED FLOGGING OF NATIVES. . By Telegraph—Press Assodation-CopyrtKU! London, January 8. ■It is reported that tho Ecv. Mr. Shackle, a Methodist missionary at Ontoug, Java, has been deported to the Solomon. Islands by order of tho Dutch Resident Commissioner, . The alleged ground' of this action is that Mr. Shackle desecrated a native temple and flogged the natives. BOARD TO MAKE STRICT' INQUIRY! (Dec. January' 9, 9 p.m.) Sydney, January 9. The Methodist Mission Board is sending Dr. George Brown, tho veteran missionary, to the Solomon Islands to inquire. into the deportation of tho Rev. Mr. Shackle. Dr.: Brown will leave on Friday. Dr. Brown states that Mr. Woodford, the Resident Commissioner in the Solomon Islands, wrote to the Mission Board intimating that Mr. Shackle, who was a young probationary missionary, had done some very foolish things, compelling his. removal. The board had heard nothing about the alleged flogging of natives. Dr. Brown was disinclined to believe in tho flogging, and also tho statements made by Island traders that some Methodist missionaries had engaged in trading.

A most searching inquiry will be made, as tho board regards the matter as serious.
