ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
6 ;— BATHING FATALITY AT PETONE. A DIVE IN SHALLOW WATER. A sad accident occurred at Petono Wharf on Saturday afternoon, .< while a party of young men were bathing there. From the report received by the police, it appears that a youth named Albert Chapman Monkhouse, 18 years of age, had gone to the beach for . a swim, in company with Harry Burnley and others. Monldiouse essayed a dive off the wharf, which was some' Bft. above the water, and at the spot where he di\;ed there was only 4ft. of water. His comrades noticed that he struck tho bottom,' and next observed him in a standing position, with his face under water. He was at once brought ashore, and his companions were then astonished to find that he had lost the use of his arms and legs. The unfortunate young man was removed to his home, and received medical attention, but lie showed no improvement, and ■ yesterday lie was brought into the Wellington Hospital, where he died at 3 p.m.— twenty-five minutes after admission. It is believed he injured his spine very badly when ho dived. An inquest will'be'held this afternoon.
SUDDEN DEATH AT NEWTOWN. THE INQUEST.. Mr.; George Trask,. a widower, 73 years of age, and brother of the late Hon. F. Trask, M.L.C-, died suddenly in Newtown yesterday morning. It appears that early yesterday morning, deceased left his home in Adelaide Road and went to Mr. Bryenton's butcher's shop to get some ice. About 8.30 a.m., while he was being attended to by Mr. Joseph Mitchell, an employee, Mr. Trask dropped to : tho ground. Sergeant Mathieson,. of the Newtown police, was immediately telephoned for and went at once to' tho shop to find that Mr. Trask had passed away. The body was then removed to the morgue where the city-coroner (Dr. A. M'Arthur, S.M.) held an.inquest at 3 p.m. Sergeant Mathiceon represented flic police and called Dr. Cameron,' Mr. Joseph Mitchell and the deceased's son. "It appears that some months ago Dr. Cameron had attended deceased for heart trouble. After hearing-the evidence, the coroner returned a verdict of death from heart disease.
THROWN PROM HIS HORSE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Hastings, January 7. A lad-named Arthur Percival, aged 13 years, was thrown from his horse and fatally injured yesterday afternoon. His saddle slipped and the horse bolted, dragging the uoy between its legs a distance of a quarter .of a-mile. He sustained a compound fracture of the. left arm,'injuries to his head, and many bad cuts. He died is the. hospital at-9.30 o'clook last night. BUSHMAN'S FATAL INJURIES. j Te Kuiti, January ,7. i;3ter Joyce, about twenty-eight years of age, and Fred. Morton, bushmen, while riding in front of a locomotive on Messrs. Ellis and :Burnand's bush tramline this morn ing, collided wjth a. truck of navvies. Joyce had both legs badly crushed, and died on his arrival at Mangapehi. Morton had one leg badly crushed, and was taken in an express to the Waikato Hospital. " ■ ' WOMAN FOUND DEAD! Auckland, January 7. Mary Gilchrist, aged about 30 or 35,_was found dead at her residence, Wliite'Street. ■The woman's head waj in a pool of blood, evidently the result of haemorrhage of the lungs. DEATH AT PAKATOA HOME. Auckland, January 7. A man named James l'j. Randall, who was sent from Wellington to Pakatoa Island a few weeks ago, died at the home to-day. Deceased, who had been ailing of late, was between 60 and 70 years of age. TWO SUDDEN DEATHS. Christchurch, January 7. Mrs. Edith Fanny Perkins,.aged fortytwo, who resided -with her husband and family at Heathcote, died suddenly this morning. She had been in poor health for some time past, but had not been confined to, her bed. This morning early she was up anil about as usual, but at about G. 30 o'clock she fell down on the floor of her residence and expired. William Scott, aged 74, a 'retired farmer,-. residing at 20 Stewart" Street, Christchurch, dropped dead to-day. Ho left.home about 9.30 a.m., and at that time'was complaining of pains in his chest and back.- He was seen to fall in the Farmers' Salejards, St. Asaph Street, at .about .12.30 p.m.. BODY IN THE HARBOUR. Timaru, January 8. An elderly man named Thomas Tate, aged 74, who had been an inmate of the Aehburton and Timaru Homes, was found drowned in the harbour this mornin» Thero'v;ero indications that he fell from the wharf. Alexander. Cameron, an employee on'Mr J. H. Tatham's sheep station of Horne.wood, on the East Coast, about 40 miles out from Masterton, was found yesterday morning lying very badly injured on the road near the homestead. He was conveyed to'the house, but died on the way in. Cameron went out riding on Saturday night, and it is supposed that-ho either 'fell or was thrown from his horse, and lay on the road until discovered in the morning. He has no relatives in J*ew Zealand, but a sister is matron' of the Alexandra Hospital in Edinburgh, and a brother is a doctor in that city. Iho deceased had intended ,to go Home in a month or two. The body will be brought in to Masterton to-dav, where an inquest will be held. *
A private letter received in Wellington rentes an accident to Mrs. Blackburne, wite of Captain Blackburne, Nautical Adviser to the Government. She was a passenger with her husband in. the steamer Hinemoa, which was making its regular trip to • the northern lighthouses, and while stepping out of. a boat at Cape Alaria van Diemen, she slipped and broko her Captain Bollons administered first aid, and the vessel put into Hawene rn >°. a me£ lical man attended Mrs! Blackburne, who was subsequently landed at Onehun^i.
