THIRD TEST AT ADELAIDE. , SOUTH AFRICA 5 FOR 279. MACARTNEY LENIENT TO ZULCH; By TelcEraph—Press Association—Copyright; (Eec. January 8, 5.5 p.m.) Adelaide, January 8. '' The third Test match between the South African team and All Australia was commenced on the Adelaide Oral in coal weather. The attendance totalled 10,000. The teams were as follow:— Australia. South Africa. J '• Bardsloy Sherwell • ! ■' Trumper Strieker ' ■ Hill Faulkner Gehrs isourse. Macartney Sinclair "' Ransford Llewellyn '• Kelleway Sncoke ■ Armstrong Zulch Carter Schwarz Cotter Hathora ' Whitty Pegler . South Africa Has First Strike." • 1 Sherwell the toss,- and Zuleh and She** well opened the South African innings on a perfect wicket, against the bowling of Cotter and Whitty, The scoring at the start was slow. When he had made 12, Zulch was badly missed at short-leg by Macartney, off Whitty. With tlia total at 31, after 35 minutes' play, Armstrong relieved Cotter, and with his second ball got Sherwell I.b.w. FaulEnet went in next, and was warmly -cheered. Zuleh, a) 18, gave Macartney another sharp left-handed chance at short-leg, o3 Whitty. Faulkner cracked two fours off. Whitty, who, at 41, handed the ball ■ to Kelleway, who had eight knocked off his first over. This completed the first fifty, after 47 minutes' play. . The scoring proceeded steadily, and Zulcli reached 50 in eighty minutes, and at the luncheon adjournment the total was 96: Zulch -50,; Faulkner 30.
On resuming, Cotter and Whitty tookup the attack. - The first century waa hoisted after 88 minutes' play. Cotter's bowling was erratic, and runs came freely from it. Armstrong relieved : him at 129, and Macartney replaced Whitty.. The batting was extremely sound, neither batsman taking the slightest risk. When. he had made 68, Zulch drove the ballhard and' low back to . Armstrong, who was unable to hold it. At 84 Macartney, at mid-off, should have held tho eanio batsmen, off Armstrong. . Faulkner's .50 ■ occupicd 95 minutes.
Zulch Reaches the Century. ' . With'the board showing 168, Fauiknefilifted Armstrong to long-off,; and Hill,, running along the boundary, . .made • a. brilliant' catch. Faulkner had batted stylishly and faultlessly for 105 minutes, and hit 7 fours. Nourse began tediously. At 178 a double change of bowling waj tried, Kelleway and-Cotter , being'put on, A' cut for three off Kelleway made Zulcl 100, after 175 minutes' batting... , In thi ■ last over before, tea, Nourse played Cob ter on. The total was then 189 (Zulch 103). After; tea Cotter and Whitty were tin bowlers, and the third ball of the lat. ter's first over Zulch skied to mid-off, and was easily : caught b? Macartney. Zulch had batted watchfully and patiently for 185 mjjiiites. Ee hit 9 fours. Cotter's Day Off. :■ The board at Zulch's departure showei four wickets down for 191. - Llewellyn joined Hathorn,- and the latter, being ag.gressive, brought 200 up, the South African innings having then been in progress 197 minutes. Hathorn. drove Whitty for 4, but .in the same over was "yorked." Five wickets for 205. Snooka 'was content to stay while Llewellyn jogged along slowly. ' Cotter still proved harmless, so at 216 he handed the ball to. Armstrong, and: Kelleway .for Whitty was the next change. The two batsmen were shaping well; and runs came more : merrily than at any previous time. Each had a big crack at Armstrong, and each time the .ball fell just out of the reach of Hill, on the boundary. Cotter bowled again at ten minutes to six, but tho batsmen carefully played'out-time, and stumps were drawn with the _ South Africans five wickets down' for 279.
The South African batting throughout lacked life. Every, batsman was over-cau- .. ; tious, though on such a beautiful wicket j more risks might have been taken. Apart - from Macartney's chances, none of which was really easy, the Australian fielding :. j was brilliant, all the day." Scores:— , A ; South Africa.—First Innings. Zulch, c. Macartrieyj b.
