The check system in regard to passengers' luggage on the railwavs was given a thorough test, during the holiday rush. About 5(1(10. lots, of luggage were, 1 checKca nt the local stations at Christmas aed New Year, these figures being practically double the figures for the corresponding period last year. A total of 2900 packages were checked for the ferry steamers to the south.

Tho pending changes in the police force, which have been looked for for some time nast, will be considered at a meeting of Cabinet o"n Tuesday next.

Private advice was received in Welling-j ton yesterday to the effect that the Maoris in the vicinity of Lako Rotoiti were somewhat disturbed owing to the waters of tho lake rising and falling every few minutes.
