Large entries havo increased tho number for tho Sydney Cup to 131, and for tho Doncaster Handicap to 97, including, Sonite and Provocation. NOTES AND COMMENTS. ■ • [Br Glkkcoe.! Moree's form has been v'dry in and out nt tho last few meetings, and her owner is quite at a loss to account for it. Prior to tho Palmerstou meeting, tho Merriwee mare galloped half a mile in record time, but, in her Awapuni races, she was not seen on tho way. Later, she came out at Ashhurst,.and badly beat St. Bill, but during the following week, at Bulls, she was tailed off on both days. . Tho seat of the trouble, may be that she requires a stronger horseman to rido her.. TheTrentham trainer, J. Ayers, started three horses on the first day of the Bulls meeting, and all of them won their races. His successes were gained by Lady Kilcheran, Merrivonia, end Bracken. 'Judging by the" form ■ displayed by Eqiiitas at Riccarton and Feilding, it certainly seemed :is if she would beat her three opponents in the Clifton Handicap at Bulls, but Lord Soult lias come on a great deal of late, and, with a big advantage in the weights, he .led (rota end to end. , Since he met with the accident in the Otaio Plate at Riccarton, Cullman has shown no pace at all, ar.d. in his two races at Ellerslie he was tailed off from the field when the winning post was reached. . , It was interidad to race Mahuta in the hack hurdle events at Bulls, but his owner decided to scratch hiui, as he was slightly sore, in front, and the trouble would probably become accentuated if he raced on the hard going, at Bulls. The well-known horseman H. Cairns, who has been in Melbourne (attached to D. J. Price's stables) during the .last nine months, is expected in Wellington shortly on. a brief s'isit. "Sid." Beid, one of the Dominion's foremost horsemen, has received a tempting offer ; to take up his residence in Buenos Ayres, South America, and has practically decided to close _ with it. The new engagement' carries with it the riding oi three-' stables, containing some thirty horses. Reid will not havo to ride at less than Bst. Gib., and, in addition to receiving a very handsome retainer, will draw 10 per cent..on'all winnings. In . nil probability, he will leave the Dominion next month. ' i■'■' 1 The Victorian breeder, Mr. Sol Green, has made another purchase in England for his Shipley Stud. His new acquisition is a beautifully-bred mare, Tuteola,. by Martagon from Scene, by SpringUeld .from Hellescene, bv Hampton from Sunshine,,by. Thormanbirfrom Sunbeam,_ by Chanticleer,' and she is in foal to William IH. . . On recent form, Irish Hide did not seem •to possess even a remote chance of winning the Greatford Stakes, of nino fur- ' longs, as, in the past, his races have all been over a short course. However, Mr.-Bull's;chestnut confounded backers by winning', and once more afforded convincing proof of the uncertainty of'racing. J.' Coyle has tho members of his team very well at present, and they should win more races in the near future. Weights for : the forthcoming W;olling_ton meeting are due Tho owner of Koran missed the acceptance for the Rangitikei Cup, but tho bay gelding was started on the. second day,-of tho meeting, when he. failed to show his customary dash.' This was due, no doubt, to . tho hard state of tho going. ■A regulation, jockeys , and apprentices, wliicji has been in forco in Western Australia'since- August 1," 190!), would probably cause consternation if it were enforced in the Dominion. It reads as follows:—"All jockeys shalL attend at the racecourse to ride work, aud all jockeys shall sign tho. attendance book, at the racecourse, every morning, the.y ride work. An official list is, in. existence showing hoiv. many mornings in a month each jockey rides, work, aud also howmany mounts he gets during each month. Should,, nt tho exDiration ■of a certain tittle, it l)e 'found that a jockey has not been riding work, aud has ridden in no, or very few, races, he will bo called upon to show causeVliy his license should not be cancelled." A recent letter from Buenos Ayres states that Mr. Jack Henrys, well known in this city, has accepted, the position of private trainer to a wealthy Argentine, owner, who has fifteen horses in, work, and who won 36 races last season. Mr. Henrys holds a gentleman rider's license, and do<\s the riding of tho jumpers himself. In his first nino mounts he rode a winner, and. on the other eight occasions, filled secoud olace. He now- enjoys t.ho distinction of having-ridden winners in New Zealand, Australia; England, and the Argentine, a unique record for a New Zealand-born horseman. , >
