A Boy Scouts' Camp of instruction.commenced at Wainoni l'ark to-doy, and will be continued till Monday next. . About 200 bovs from almost every part of the South Island arc in'camp, and it is expected that when all liave arrived the total will be close upon 400. The camp is under District Scoutmaster Goodman, and Dominion Chief Scout Cossgrove is also in camp.
BUILDING IN FEILDING. Fcilding,' January 4. Buildings, including dwellings and business. premises, to the value of .£15,000, 'were erected in the borough of Feilding last year. The outlook for the building trade for the new year is promising.
THE STRIKE CANARD. Wcstport, January 4. ■Work was resumed this morning in all the collieries after the holidays. Nothing is known in this district of any probable labour troubles.
HIS SISTER'S HOUSE. Waihi, January 4. John William Butler w:is. charged at the Police Court with wilfully setting lire to his -sister's house at -Waikino on December 27. Ho was committed to the Supreme Court. YELLOW FLAG NO LONGER. Christchurch, -January 4. The Knight of the Garter sailed this morning for Auckland. The smallpox patient was left in quarantine at Lyttelton. GOLD DREDGE SINKS. Dunedin, January 4. The Rise and Shine No. 2 dredge sunk in a paddock at Cromwell at noon in 40ft. of water. The crew escaped in a boat in the nick of time.
SPARK FROM BURNING BUSHES; .Hokitika. January 3. The residence of Mr. J. A. Murdoch, Mayor of Kumnra, was destroyed by fire on Saturday afternoon. The fire was caused by. a spark from blackberry bushes being burnt near. by. The place was gutted, but a portion of the furniture and also the piano were saved. The insurances are not available. FIRE AT KAITANGATA, □ unedin, January 3. A seven-roomed house, owned and occupied by Mr. T. Reeves, was- destroyed by firo at Kaitanga.ta this morning. Only a few articles were saved. The lire is supposed to have originated in the kitchen. The house was insured for .£l5O, and the furniture for .£250, all in the State office. Mr Reeves- estimates the loss at .£SOO over the insurance.
LOST IN THE MIST. Tlmaru, January 3. Mr. H. S. Vincent, architect, of Ashburton, lost himself in the mist and rain for 33 hours oil Saturday and Sunday on the Albuny Hills, and was almost exhausted, when met by a shepherd.
BOOTMAKERS' PROPOSALS. Dunedin, January 3. The bootmakers' conference to-day passed a resolution recommending the Federal Council to obtain the opinion of members of the federation as to the establishmentof a co-operative boot factory, and, if the branches are favourable, the Federal Council to appoint a committee to drawup a scheme. The secretary was also instructed to .write to Ministers and members of Parliament, asking them to support legislation for having all boots and shoes made in the Dominion branded "Made in' New Zealand," also with tho manufacturer's name.
