BOWLS.
THE CENTRE TOURNAMENT. FIRST DAY'S PLAY. The minimi tournament of tho Wellington Bowling Centre was begun yesterday on the four city greens—Wellington, Victoria, Newtown, anil Thorndon. Two hundred players took i>art, the twelve city and suburban clubs contributing rinks as follows: — Wellington, 11; Ivelburne, 3; Victoria, 5; Karori, 5; To Hiwi, 3; Hutt, 2;' Johnsonville, 3; Petonc, 2; Khandallali, 1; Newtown, S; Thorndon, 6; Hataitai,' 1: total, 50 rinks. -.. Tho ono thing that marred the day's enjoyment was tho weather. A blustering; northerly blew without intermission, and a shower of rain interrupted play for about half an hour, soon after 12 o'clock. The moisture was not enough to affect the greens, but the wind simply made • havoc with tho. play. Skill availed almost nothing against its vagaries. Kinks of crack bowlers were, as often as not, defeated-by scratch teams. Never were bowling results more difficult to forecast. The line points of the game were of no avail—they were simply blown away. Another effect of the boisterous weather was that .there wero comparatively few spectators on the greens. . The general arrangements of the tournament were in the hands of tho secretary of the Centre (Mr. Churchward), and were carried out in the most systematic and satisfactory manner. Tho admirable organisation and smooth working contributed much to tho pleasure of the bowlers.'Below aro. the results of yesterday's play. The name of the skip appeal's last in each rink in the first round. In other rounds, the names of skips only are given. Tho names of the clubs are also given in the first round, initial letters being used as follow to save repetitionW., Wei-, lington; Ke., Kelburne;l£a., Karori; Kh., Khandallali; A 7., Victoria; To, To Hiwi; H., Hutt;'Ha., Hataitai; P., Petono; N., Newtown; T., Thorndon.
