MISSIONS TO SEAMEN.

On Sunday, Christnms Day, bright and hearty services were hold in the Seamen's Instituto at 11 a.m., 7 p.m., and 8.15 p.m., when Jfr. James Moore, the inissioner, preached sermons appropriate to the great Christian'festival. Hymns and carols were sung by the choir, and largo congregations were present.. Sir. Gardner presided at the organ. Mr. Mitchell sangjhe solo "Nazareth" at the evening Bsrvieo. There was. a crowded-muster of men at the sailors' singing circle at the close of the services, -when hymns and carols were sung with.-great heartiness. Yesterday an all-day- picnic was held in Mrs. Ehodes's beautiful grounds at Wadestown, in perfect weather. All sorts of sports and games were indulged in by the men with great enthusiasm, under the able guidance'of jfr. Mcore. The following were prize-winners:—Misses M. Jennes (2) ' and Shaw, Messrs. H. M'Ganty.(7), W. Mantell (2), J. Handle (2), C. Wilson, Dixon'®,'!?. Moore (2), "IV.' Jackson (2), J. Anderson (2), J. Rhodes (3), P. Connolly, H. Hudson (2), J. Fa'rrell, E. Hyde. A. Godfrey, S. Tanzell, C. Harrison, and D'. Murphy. In the tng-of-war the Drayton Grange heat the Tainui, but the Tainui beat the Grange men in , the football match. Hearty cheers were given for. Mrs. Rhodes and Mr. Mackay. .. ■ ' • A concert was' given' in the evening, the following rendering items:—Miss Cunningham (2), Dix (2), Wilson, Talbot, and Baker, Messrs. Gardner, Paul, Burgess, Holder, and M'Ganty. Popular choruses were sung by. tho sailors in' good stylo under Mr. Moore's direction. There was an'amusing .conundrum competition, prizes.being won bv. sailors from ships in port. The prizes" donated by Mrs. Rhodes were presented by Mrs. Williams, in 1 the absence of Mrs. Rhodes. Mrs. Williams met with a magnificent reception from tho. sailors. Lunch, tea and supper were kindly provided by Mrs. Rhodes.
