•TO-DAY'S DINNER. (Specially written for This Dominion.) TUESDAY. Hnm and Tongue. Salad. Potatoes. Sindisfarne Pudding. . ■ SINDISFARNE PUDDING. One cup of flour, 1 cup of suet, 1 cup of marmatauo or jam, 1 cup of milk, 1 teaspoonful of carbomtto of soda, a pinch of salt. Mis all these ingredients well together, put into a buttered' basin, leaving room to swell and steam 2V hours. ■ FOB TO-MORROW. Loin of mutton, tomatoes, bread, , ; SOCIAL AND PERSONAL. At the Home of Compassion. . Tho Christmas tree aud concert given nt the Home- of Compassion on Saturday afternoon for the children w;as a. great success. Tho treo was a. fascinating picture, covered with toys and bonbons, and perched at the top of it was a most benevolent-looking JMber Christinas. The liev.'Mother Aubert was presented with a beautiful bouquet of white flowers by little Miss Barbara Beveridge as a Christmas gift. Miss Eva Myers had a heavy pieco of work on her hands when sho mado fully, eighty little bags for lollies and sent them ready, filled to the home. Musical items were contributed by the Misses Agnes aud Hosie Segrief, anil dancing by Miss Olive Sandlant, greatly to tho pleasure- of the children., Among those jiresenj; were Archbishop Redwood, the Hon. Joan Dickson-Poynder, Mrs. and. Miss Beveridge, Mrs. H. Sandlant, '■ Miss M'Donald, and Miss Flux. Many thanks are due to those who,. notwithstanding thb" niany calls made upon them, assisted with such heartiness iu the task of brightening: the Christmas time for tho inmates of the Home of Compassion. The Presbytorian Orphanage. The children belonging to the. Presbyterian Orphanage began their Christinas festivities on Saturday evening with a sumptuous'tea.and on Christmns D,ay itself the children lxdonging to St. Andrew's Sunday School clubbed together and provided the orphanage children with a dinner. The rooms had been attractively decorated with festoons of foliaye and with flowers, and there were several visitors present. Altogether a very happy time was spent. . During the week just ended the members of the Sunshine Guild had invited the orphans, with several children from other'quartcrs of tho city,, to a Chrstmas tree, so that there has been no lack of entertainment. There aro twenty-seven children at present iu the orphanage, as many as it can hold. Farewell Social, , A very enjoyable /evening took place at' Mr. B. Tomlinson's,- Pleekville, on : Wednesday, December .2.1, the occasion being a farewell social, tendered by tho majority of the settlers to Mr. Chas. Jenkins, late teacher, Mongaone School. The building used, was artistically decorated With evergreens and flowers. The evening being fine a large number; of { I friends |were. present.; Tho social comI menced with an. overture by'Mr, W. Hunt, after which, dancinj. and games took place. Songs and recitations wcro given by Miss Edge, Messrs.' H. Pawson, A. Hazel, Mr.-and Mrs. H. Petersen.(duct), and the'-Misses Edge (duet). The. accompaniments were played by Miss E. Jcpson and Miss B, Edge. Mr. P.-Carrol danced an Irish jig. Ab'om eleven .o'clock the. guest of the evening .was agreeably surprised to find himself carried into the building- in fa beautiful flower bedecked chair, (the-work of Miss Jepson) amid great applause. / Mr. E. Tomlinson, on behalf . oPTiie settlers, briefly described tho good -work , done by the late teacher, who now transferred to.Waione, where it is understood he has received well-deserved promotion, and stated.'the great pleasure it gave .him in.presenting Mr,:.Jenkins .with /a handsome . travelling r-ug : and umbrella. Mr. Jenkins snoke of, his gratification in finding his efforts had been so appreciated, and was happy in he had made so many friends during his short stay.at Pleekville. With cheers he was carried into a large marquee, where, a prettily-decorated' supper-table ;was arranged, aud full justice wss done to the delightful supper prepared. When it I was over,. dancing commenced, and was, kept up till the-. small hours of the morning. Music was kindlv supplied by Messrs, CV Small and' W. Hunt; Mr. H. I Pawsnn'acted as :M.C. -The singing, "Auld Lang Svne". and ''He's a Jolly Good Fellow" brought tho evening's en-joyment-to'a close.
On Friday last at "Win'gfield," Middlemarch, the death tool; place of Nurso "Georgie" Bennett, at one time nursein the Napier Hospital.. Nurso Bennett had made many friends while in tho institution, and although her death was not altogether unexpected those.to whom she has endeared herself cannot but feel regret that her life should have ended so soon. '.■ Mrs. Henry (Masterton) has been spending the Christmas days in Wellington. • On Wednesday evening, at Naflier, Sisters Pallot and Kuirimer, who have resigned from the nursing staff of the hospital, wero presented .with ; five, volumes of George Eliot's works and"' a'• hypodermic set respectively. The presentations were made by Sub-Matron Wright, and,, were acknowledged-with thanks by the recipients. Nurse Kummer goes to Wairoa-; and" Nurse Pallot enters upon private nursing,; . , '■• :'/..-. Mrs. A. L.> Wilson is at "present in Auckland;'where she is the guest .of her sister, .Mrs. Willoughby-Kenny. Miss Zoe 1 Holmes (Masterton), is' spending some/days with :hc,r. sister-in Fcilding. On Saturday Miss Putnam was the re-' cipient. 'of- a pretty pearl brooch" fromher music pupils. Miss. Eila : Bristow' and Miss Rita Moss, on behalf of the'pupils, made the '■ presentation.' Miss Moodio. is a visitor to Mastertbii; Mr. and Mrs.. C. Perry'(Masterton),. with, their children, leave, on" a .holiday visit to Auckland and Rotorua on Thursday. ; Miss Rothcnberg' (Wellington) is spending some days,in Masterton, and is slay- . ing with Mrs. Myer Coselberg. Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Jackson and Mr. and Mrs. Hollings (Masterton) leave on a .motor, trip to Rotorua to-day. ' Miss Wolff, who has been staying, with Mr.. and Mrs. Burns (Carterton) for lite Christmas holidavs leaves this week for a visit to Auckland. ' Mr. and Mrs. Kent-Johnston (Featherston) are spending a fortnight at Seatoun. Mr. and Mrs. H. R. Wood (Bannevirke) are. visitors !o Masterton aud are staying with Mr. and Mrs. St. George. Mrs. -Ferguson (Napier) with her husband, is visiting .Wellington and is staying with her people. ' •

St, Mary's Homes. The children belonging to St. Mary's Homes at Karori■began their Christmas festivities with n Christmas, tree on Saturday, nt which. everybody received something . desirable and attractive, and on Sunday every girl received n. parcel- as well. 10-day they intend to finish u» the holidays with a picnic at Paremata."
