J FIRST DAY. HANDICAP AA'ON BY SEYCHELLES. '. Favoured by excellent weather yester- ) day, the opening day of the Hutt Valley ; Trotting Club's meeting, held on the Petona Recreation Grounds, could not have been anything but a success. Tho attendance, which was estimated at over ■1000 people, was one the best. on. record, and tho increased revenue from the totalisator and the "gates" will bo welcome to the _club. Taken altogether, Hie sport was of. an interesting description, and the last two events were productive of particularly exciting finishes. The principal event at the meeting, tho Hutt Valley Trotting Club Handicap, was easily : won by Seychelles, who started favourite. ' Boadicea annexed two events during the I afternoon. Only one trivial accident oc- " curred in the racing, tho wheel of a gig ; collapsing. The stewards were called to- ' gether after the second event to inquire • as to why Heirloom took no part in the ' race, and found that the explanation of • tho driver was satisfactory. Totalisator investments for the day amounted to [ .£2GJ7, which is an increase, on the amount for the corresponding day last year. Two bookmakers were licensed by the club, and did good business.
