Monday's cases at tho Jlagistrate's - Court wcro quickly disposed of. "With the exception of two vagrants, tho of- j fendc-rs wore all charged with insobriety, j Stephen Golding, alias Grant, ami James i Doylo, wlto were jointly charged with [ being idle and disorderly persons, | pleaded not guilty. Detective Cassclls ! stated (hat they liad arrived from | Christchurch about a v.vek 'ago, and had j done no work since. On Saturday last \ fhey had been begging alms in Lasubton [ Quay. When arrested one of tho men | had a very small sum cf money, and t tho other had nothing. Both had pre- j viocsly been convicted on .vagrancy 1 charges, and tho magistrate , sentenced each to three months' imprisonment. Violet I'aton, a young woman, ■ with drunkenness, had a long list of | previous convictions against her. J!r. i Arnold, Visiting Justice, stated that he had been in communication with the ' woman's, mother, who had sent sufficient money to pay her daughter's fare homo to tho Auckland district. Accused was convicted and ordered to 'conic up for sentence when called on, on , condition that siio left for homo by tho mid-day train. * ■, Thomas Eastman, for drunkenness, was '. fined JOs., in default seven days' imprisonment. Jane Walsh, who 'did not appear to answer a charge of drunkenness, was lined 10s., with'tho alternative of 2i hours' imprisonment. Two ftrstolfending inebriates wcro remanded for seven days for. curative treatment. Three other first offenders wcro convicted and discharged, and another, who did not appear, was ordered to forfeit his bail of 10s., or undergo J8 hours' imprisonment.
