With'tho exception of a north-easterly breeze, the - weather was perfect. The courts wero in first-class order, and some interesting games resulted. There was a. large at- -. tendance, including visitors from different parts of the Dominion. The arrangements wero very complete, and were favourably commented upon by. the visiting players. The annual tournament of. the Wei-: lingtou Provincial Lawn Tennis Associa-' . tion.was opened yesterday at Day's Bay. Competitors wero not quite so; numerous'as i fast year, a few of the most familiar faces being absent. The day, however, was in", other, respects auspicious. The weather was perfect, tho courts were in fair order, and the general arrangements for the .tournament worked smoothly.. Most of the games were well contested, and close finishes were the rule." The ■ handicappers—Messrs. 'Lawrence, Barclay, and Keau (who is also secretary)—had made very few mistakes. In the . meu's singles, Stevens seemed to have been well treated by the handicappers, and he should bo prominent in the final. In the ladies' singles,'the topnotchers have got through their handicaps and are in the second and.fourth rounds, so that sonic interesting finals are to be expected to-day.
