Streets work being taken in hand before the winter. Levels had been taken and grades arranged for Melrose, Murray, Campbell; Bentinck, and William Streets to prevent recurronco of flooding in heavy rainstorms. It was reported that the cost of riverprotection works repairs for: the quarter had totalled £1 14s. 3d. Tho treasurer reported that the bank; overdraft would be £2,70 9s. 3d. when rifients'.authorised had been made. Tnero was still'the Government subsidy, on rates ; as an asset, and, also the. second instalment 'of 'the" current' year's rate available. Tho latter became duo on "January'l3, and, in accordance with a previous resolution of the board, would bo sued for if.not paid by January 31. Asked what amount of the first year's rates were still outstanding, ,the .treasurer stated that, with the exception of one instance where action had been taken to attach the property, there was not more than £5 outstanding of ■the 1908-09 rate, and of this amount in only three cases would it be necessary to proceed by publication of sunfmons owing to' the addresses of owners being unknown. The clerk was authorised to take proceedings in these cases. A motion by Commissioner Davis in connection with metal on roads and footways, of which notice had been given, was referred to the Works Com-.mit-teo-to report-at next meeting.
