THE PEST OF THE BLOW-FLY.
: A SERIOUS FARM TROUBLE. < Tho frequency'of'references in English and. American agricultural papers to. the .curse ,of the blow-fly is an in-, dication of how serious this pest can become. . -• .'.'Tho blow-fly has .reached' alarming, proportions in the sheep : districts of .Australia. It is-iiow-one'of. tho most destructive pests' in ■' tho I ".country. Crutching (says an Australian writer) is .'generally resorted to, and'" jso is dipping .ill arsenical and other washes, but the '.effect of both • those, measures .is transitory. The loss of vast numbers of ■ insectivorous birds -through . the poisoned bait laid for the rabbits, 1 and the 'dead carcasses of bunny as maggot media,, are bath contributing factors. ■ Ono pastoralist declares that; the heavy rump folds arc.:a.groat attraction' for tho fly, , and he is determined to breed these out. This will, of course, mean a loss of ; wool, but'a saving in tho loss of sheep and expense in treatment'. The whole problem is difficult."
