ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.

AN INQUEST. . FATALITY AT THE WHARF. . George Landi, a wharf labourer, whe was admitted to the hospital on Monday suffering from injuries received through his arm catching in the wheel of a passing, lorry, died yesterday morning. An inquest' was held by Dr. M'Aiv thur, S.M., yesterday. Ernest Baird, who was near deceased at the' time oi tho accident, stated in evidence that Landi was proceeding along the whari with a hand-trolly,, and upon the'approach of a lorry laden with wheat moved aside to allow it to pass. He' at first made ample /clearance for the vehicle, but before the wheels had passed started to move off. Iu doing,so he was struck by one of tho wheels arid thrown down. ■ His arm became caught in the wheel and he was dragged along some distance. In witness's opinion no blame was attachable to tho driver. If deceased had not unintentionally obstructed the passage.of the vehicle the accident would not have happened. The evidence of the driver of the lorry, William F. Evans, who' is eemployed by Blako. and Carlisle, showed that he was not aware- of the accident until he was told "he had run over someone." In his opinion there was plenty of room to pass if deceased had kept the position which he had first taken up. The depositions of deceased to a great extent-corroborated the evidence given by Baird. Deceased also stated that "he thought that there was scarcely room to pass." The coroner, returned a verdict of accidental 'death, death being due to shock, caused by. injury. . .
