WELLINGTON'S GENEROSITY.
SIX MONTHS GIFTS IN CASH.' . When the question of charity as applied to tho centres in.New Zealand becomes the theme of conversation, the ■people of Wellington are often eet down as a close, hard-fisted commercial lot, to whom charity is almost a stranger. On snch occasions there are those who will point to- the fine bequests and individual donations to Auckland like the Cornwall Park and the M'Kelvie and Grey Collections, but it is surely more to the credit of a city when almost everyone contributes a little' to a good cause than for four or five big men to endow a city, although, of course, both are..valuable.,, blessings. . Wellington cannot he 'said';to v h'avo-been "at"'the height of its prosperity during the past sis months— indeed,'it has'been stated that commerci■a'ily the'obifditioSstfiave'been the_ reverse of bright—and it is therefore giving away a little to quote the amount of money which has been, raised for charitable and socially' useful objects here. during that timi , . For tho sake of convenience, we quote the six months ended on- Saturday last, and, cutting out all the church.and minor charities, the Girls'. Realm Guild, etc.,' it has been ascertained that the following large sums of money have been subscribed:— £, s. d. Boys' Institute • '4,200 0 0 Wellington Hospital 436 U 7 Children's' Hospital (without subsidy) ;.... 7,311 9 4 Salvation Army .(self-denial). 1,181 0 0 St. John Ambulance Association 129 1110 Mother Aube-rt's Jubilee, say 2,200 0 0 Total.
