Victoria College I, on courts 5 and 0. Men s C grade: Kilbirnie v. Brougham Hill 11, on court 4; Muritai v. Lower Hutt, on court 9; Oriental v. Trinity, on court 10; Petone v. St. John's, on court 12. Men s D grade: Oriental v. Victoria College 11, on court 11. Ladies C grade: Oriental v. Kilbirnie, on court 1. Last Saturday's Matches, ,A number of match results, mostly seniors, have come to hand for publication during the week.- Of rather faded and tawdry interest are these . belated happenings when one comes to ponder over them in cold blood after a week's interval. Tho wise French say "Chacun a '■en gout" in.such cases, .and so to the basket with them. It is the right place. In the B grade last Saturday Brougham Hill I defeated Hutt with some to spare. Kirk being the only Huttitc to win. his single, and with Purdy .to. win a double, certainly showed the best form for. his side. Both these games were keenly con-, tested, 5 all being called in the last set in each case. _ Tho'Petone v. Victoria College match shows Duncan and Austin still consist-, ently victorious. Parkinson and Andrews losing their singles to Duncan and De la Mare, balanced matters somewhat; but Potone was not to be denied and took the two doubles—that between AustinAndrews and Wilson-De Iα Mare being very close at 6 —5, o—s.0 —5. Brougham Hill 11, with its full team, treated Trinity to a round or two without the gloves.i Townsend's defeat . of Crewes was somewhat of a surprise to the latter and many others. Crewes could not once get into his driving game and Townsend kept him away, his play being pretty and effective. Barton played Correlf out at G-3, C-3. Kcan should not havo allowed Swinburne to run him. to' threo sets; but the latter player is very steady and has the very useful power of anticipating, and if ho should only take tho trouble, would be highly, successful. Hurley's experience, won his match from Jacobson who played up. The 'double's ._ wero ' both in favour ot .while,,the Hutt - v. Oriental match was somewhat one-sided, the other ' matches ' were all exceedingly Kilbirnie, in its match with Trinity,, though winning with four rubbers to spare, were only six games to tho good out of iiinety. played. Dick won tho on y match : f6r.Trinity, .beating, his old clubmate Stringer, . 9-3. ..AU,vi tho , other jnatcho3)"vwoi,'fi extremely-,even.. ln.tiie Mitchell-Pavitt match; each, player won on his service, and, seeing Mitchell served • first," the game went to him... • Brougham Hill second by defeating 'Potone is still in 'the running, having lost only one match.' But Petono put up a good performance, . being only four games to the bad at the end of the day.. Victoria College, while defeating St. John's by.some fifteen games, were even on sets, showing that scores aro not the best criteria of the-state of the game. Picken and -M'Dowall should have won their match. . Khandallah, by defeating Muritai by a margin of only two games, with sets even, are still unbeaten., Tho game was very willing,-and seeing, that KhandaUah was quite unused; to the grass, it was a most creditable performance. '•',.• ' " . -, The second round of the. D grade started, and Johnsonvillo players show' signs of repeating their performance of; tho first round. They defeated V ictona: College by 5 rubbers to 1. • Trinity defeated Brougham Hill, the runners-up of the first round, and may bo in the running at.the end. Victoria' College were altogether too strong for Oriental. : -, ■ Ladies' Games. Tho ladies' matches in the B grade wero very'even: Brougham Hill defeating Petone, the winners of the round, by i games with sets even, and Victoria Collego defeating Trinity by 7.games with sots even. Brougham Hill should win this round, though Victoria College will run them close. The C grade matches resulted in wins for Khandallah, St. John's, and Johnsonville. ' ' School Tourney. -■ ' ' Tho first day's play of, the Public School Tourney showed some very interesting play, and wo may expect from the large number of players there are evidently in the schools at present, large .entries for the boy and girl events at Christmas, and, better still, an increased number of youthful players in the clubs next season. To-day's Matches. The A grade finishes to-day, the. postponed Thorndon-Brougham Hill . match being played at Thorndon, and tho Muri-tai-Wellington second fixture (both teams being given a bye on October 22) being played at Wellington. There snould be no alteration in the positions in this grade. In the men's ,B grade, tho second round starts. : In tho men's C grade, Brougham Hill firsts play Khaudallah. Both being unbeaten, the result, of tho first round will probably be decided; also in tho ladies' C grade, Khandallah meets St. John's, both being undefeated. Men's B Grade Results. The following aro the results of the first round of the Men's B Grade:— h a '■ i !■■§ 1 i «■ ■§ b g "S -S '3 J2 3 3 '?. . . g >-l tf «! w <i O < Petone "... G. 6 0 24 11 51 28 415 347 Brougham. By comparing the scores in this analysis it will bo noted that Brougham Hill's first team's figures are . tho best outside of the matches. So, if the form of the players remains the same, there should be another name at the head of the list at tho end of this nest round. Tennis or Balloon? Tennis players were subjected to a species of "diversion" last Saturday of a kind to which no one takes kindly. . The Ferry Company endeavoured to levy a toll of sixpence above the usual, because they had a balloon show at the bay, and, although some players managed to hold their own against the demand, yet there wero some who paid. This, despite the fact that an assurance had been given that the usual faro would be charged It is to be hoped that when tho com'Dany h.ave a side show in. the future on
a day when tenuis players and local residents will be likely to be travelling, that it will provide some facilities to obviate a recurrenco of last week's medley. Items of Interest. C.'B. Disher, Muritai's honorary secretary, lias, by orders of his medico, been compelled to retire from the ga'mo for the rest of the season. Butcher, the Brougham Hill colt, is down with pleuropneumonia, and is deburred from participating in the schools tourney, of which he was picked as the winner. Harry Howo was absent from the Brougham Hill team last Saturday, owing to indisposition. Duncan and Austin, of Petone, intend travelling to Hawke's Bay and then to Pahiatua for the tournaments. It is understood that 11. N. K. Swanston will not be nt the Now Zoalaad meeting. Fisher and Peacock are regularly looking for practice, and it is mooted that they will defend their joint title at the meeting. There are already many inquiries about the. provincial handicaps at Christmas, and the championships at Anniversary time nt Masterfon, and local entries should he very large. Should the visit of an Australian team lake place, tennis people will lie treated to a feast that seldom comes their way. It is to be hoped that Wellington people will not make ararngements for their social entertainment before the place of meeting is decided by the council.
