Saturday, ' December 10.—Wellington Cruising Yacht Club's first race. T.A.S. Club. The. To.Aro Sailing Club will hold a race . for Mr. "Jack" Barnard's trophy this afternoon, commencing at 3 o'clock. Boat-owners who failed in last ># Saturday's, race without some distinguishing mark on their mainsail, are notified by the secretary that, at a meeting of the club', it was decided that each boat sailing in the club's "races must carry such a mark. If any boat appears at the starting-lino without this its starting flag will not be hoisted. The . new course, which is to be used in future by the club, seems, judging from last Saturday's-"race, satisfactory. The course is as follows:—Start from Clyde Quay Wharf; then to Coromandel Buoy; then to Oriental Bay Buoy; to Jerningham Buoy; to Coromandel; then to the Clyde Quay Wharf. Looking at the handicapping it would seem that this important addendum to the event is in very competent hands. The Kival was the .only boat which sustained a breakdown, and this' happened quite near the starting-line. Her rudder carried away, ' and the fresh southerly breeze would have blown her down to Thorndon if a launch had not come to the rescue. Jottings and Gossip. Sunday morning last was an ideal day for launches, but there was riot enough wind for the "white wings." However, the yachtsmen were not disappointed, because; towards afternoon, a nice southerly breeze sprang up, which at times nude the leeward gunwale awash. A number of yachts were outside, and some cruised about the entrance. Of the Te Aro Sailing Club's, fleet, various craft went cruising. The boats kept in a line all the way over, among them being Bedwing, Kaitare, Kitty, Lotus, and AVinifred.. The scows spent a very enjoyable outing at Ward Island. Mr. J. Kelly's, now 30ft. lead-keel yncht will probably be seen in Wellington Harbour shortly. . ■ The Wellington Cruising Yacht Club opened its season on Saturday afternoon last at Day's. Bay. ' The yachts journeyed to Day's Bay, and afternoon tea was had on ■ board the Ngaira. The club ■ will hold its first race of the season this afternoon. . ". Bad luck befell Mr. H. Smith's new launch the other - evening. "Mainshcet" thinks that he who used an uncovered light, near benzine, was somewhat absentminded. Front appearances, however, the launch' does hot feehi; to.'.bo badly damaged. Owners.and, others'.onght to learn n lesson. Is'there-ariyneed tostatowhat that, lesson-is?,. ." , . ".," The Ngaira intends leaving on Christmas Eve for a fortnight in Pelorus Sounds. She is rather shorthanded, as some of her crow are unable to get holiday leave, and her skipper would be glad'to hear of any vnchtsmen who would like to make the trin with them. ' The Lipton Cup, presented by SirThos. Lipton, of. America Cup fame, to be won twice by the same owner, was to to competed for for the second time under the flag of the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron last Saturday afternoon. The race, which is only open to the 8-metre class and under, was to be sailed over the j Manly-Watson's, Bay course. Last season Sunbeam was the successful yacht.
