(From Our Suoclal CorroaponaentaJ « — SHANNON. Rifleman Shearman was successful in winning Mr. Foubister's trophy in the final competition on the riilo range ou Saturday afternoon. The "open night" held by the Hope of Shannon Lodge of the J.O.S.T. on Friday night was. highly successful. Bro. IS. H. Uibb delivered an interesting address on the aims and principles of the society. Sisters Monteath and Laurvig and Bro. Gibb gave vocal and musical items, and Sister Moodi Bell, Bros. Exall and Peterson, contributed readings. Including children's classes, there are 183 classes in the schedule of the local Horticultural Society's show, which will lie held on Si arch 3. and 4. Mrs. tialland is president, Mrs. Sag treasurer, anil Mrs. Kyree secretary. i OTAKI.' It is stated that Mr. A. H. Rollo may bo a candidate at the next election for the Otaki seat. On Tuesday the local creamery manufactured, two and a half tons of butter —a record—in addition to which 100 gallons of cream was sent to AVellington. Tho local State School breaks up on December 15, when the annual distribution of prizes will take place. Those connected with the Otaki Methodist Sunday School have reason to be satisfied with their anniversary, which was celebrated by special services on Sunday, and a "social" in the church on Tuesday evening. The following programme was gone through, each item .being much enjoyed-.—Opening hymn, by the scholars; solo, Kathleen Pcnn; Scripture recitation, Olive .Tudd; song, Amos M'Kegg: vocal duet, Misses Bands and Gwen. Hughes; hymn, scholars; solo, Elsie Judd; recitation, Miss Beaumont; Scripture recitation, Elsie Judd;. duet, Elsie Judd and Kathleen Penn; recitation, Miss Pole: The annual report and balance-sheet were read by the hon. secretary (Miss Foster). Tho former showed a roll number of 56 children, with an average of 42. There was a staff of nine teachers, with an average attendance of eight. The school entered nine candidates for the Sunday School Union examination, and several were successful in obtaining certificates. During the year an infant department had been formed, and a cradle roll instituted, a number of names being entered thereon. The balance-sheet showed an income of £13 4s. 2d. for the year, which, together with a credit balance of £3 7s. 6d. from last year, had. all been expended, the largest item of expenditure being in connection with the infant department of the school. During the evening tho'Rev. Mr. Rands, who occupied the chair, congratulated tho Sunday School on the success of the year's work. The school was not. a very largo one, but was, ho believed, ono of "the best staffed in tho Dominion, and was also excellently graded. Mr. C. H. Williams, superintendent of the school, expressed pleasure at the work dono, by the scholars during the year, and was exceedingly gratified at the success of the anniversary this year. He expressed his thanks to the teachers for the great assistance they had

given him during the year; to Miss Foster for presiding at the organ for the anniversary services and practices; to Mr. C. Jones for'training the little ones; and to the orchestra for. assisting with music. CARTERTON. The annual distribution of prizes in connection with St. Mark's branch school at Parkvale took place ou Tuesday, there being a good attendance, including many adults. The Rev. It. Young, vicar of the parish, presided, and, in distributing the book's, congratulated the scholars upon their success. Special prizes were won by Jean Bower, Florence Hawke, ami Laurence Middoy. Jlr. \V. C. Buchanan, M.P., will present the prizes at the Belvedere State School on Friday week. The Morris-tube shooting competition for the challenge cup given by Mr. E. Eagle, juur., to the local Territorials, has been won by Sergeant Eeid with a score of 139. Private Morgan was second, and Corporal Dudson third. Mr. AV. C. Zabell, of Belvedere, has decided to relinquish dairying ou account of ill-health.
