THE SLIMNESS OF TWO PUNTERS. (By Telecrapli.-Sppcinl. Correspondent.) Palmerston N., December 5. ■Sir Joseph Ward has replied to an invitation from the Mayor (Mr. J. A. Nash) to attend the National Sweet Pea Association's Show this week. The Prime Minister, in his reply, states that pressure of business will preclude him being present. The Governor has also replied that be cannot be present owing to having accepted an invitation to attend the Boy Scouts' field day at Feilding on Wednesday. ... Mr. C. Pickering,'."of Palmerston, a wellknown poultry fancier,, has. sent to America for a trio'of white Plymouth ltocks, a bird'with which ho has-been very successful .at! all shows. Tho Methodist Church was very nicely decorated yesterday, the occasion being ~ tho i anniversary services in connection with the' Sunday School.' The children rendered special hymns and had the assistancoi of .tlje-'choir ./andean'.-orchestra; Mr. F. -J. Chisliolm being conductor. In the morning (he Rev. A. Doull, of St. Andrews') preached, and in tho afternoon the children were addressed by.the Rev.. A. Allen; of Taihape. A solo by Miss S! Hodges was. a•. pleasing • feature of the musical portion of the services.
A meeting of the Palmerston Licensing .Committee was held to-day. . The only business .was the -applications for the transfers' of two licenses which were granted. , . , , .
At tlio Police: Court to-day a youth' named John' Leary was brought up'on remand ..before Mr; A. D.'Thomson, S.M., charged with stealing a horse, saddle, and bridle at Taihape. The boy pleaded guilty. Sub-Inspector O'Donovau, who prosecuted, stated that the horse, saddle, and bridle had been returned, to the owner. Tho magistrate, after consulting the sub-, inspector, said. that he would ileal with the cast* summarily, and would pass sentence with'a view to having the boy sent to an industrial school. Accused was accordingly sentenced to fourteen , days' imprisonment, the sentence to date from , the time at which he was arrested. At the Magistrate's Court to-day Frank Matthews, representing a fire-extinguish-ing apparatus, was fined 10s., and costs 285., fo'r lighting a. fire in the 'borough after 7.30 p.m. • • • . E; A. Ingram, of Marton, was fined 20s. and costs lls. for cruelty- to fowls by enclosing them in a box too small for them. The case was brought at the instance of the. Palmerston ..Society for the Prevention of Cruelty , to Animals. 1 John C. Weller, billiard saloon-keeper at Foston was charged at the ' Magistrate's Court, to-day with betting with infants, and also with laying totulisator odds. Sub-Inspector O'Donovan prosecuted anil Mr. H..E. Cooper appeared for accused. It was.stated in evidence that accused lic.cl made .bets with two young men named Cqley and ■ "Walls on . lluaparataha in the County Cup at the Carterton meeting.. Accused discovered that the beta had been made after the race had boon run as the result of a telegram received from a man named Lambess, and Welicr refused to pay out. In giving evidence both Coley and Walls said that they did not know that the horse had won when they made the bets. In giving judgment the magistrate said that these casesshowed the depths to which somo people would go in endeavouring to win money from others. He had , no doubt that a deliberate attempt had been made to win money. , from another person dishonestly. It was very regrettable 'that young. fellows should degrade themselves and endeavour to obtain money in this way. Both cases against the defendant were serious that of betting with infants tho more so. Defendant should have ■ taken tho trouble to ascertain the npos of tho yoiin;; men before betting with them. Tie wa-i fined ,ClO and costs, (1) fnv betting with an infant, and (2) for betting totalisator odds.
