The Day's Bay courts have been allotted for this afternoon's matches as follow:—Men's A grade: Thorndon v. Wellington 11, on courts 7 and 8. Men's B grade: Brougham Hill II v. Trinity, on courts 5 and 0. Men's C grade: Kilbirnie v. Trinity, ,6n court 9; lluritai v. Khandallali, on courts 11 and 12; Oriental v. Lower Hutt, on court 1; Victoria College v. St. John's, on court 4. Men's D grade (second round): Victoria College I v. Oriental, on court 2; Trinity v. Brougham Hill, on court 3. Ladies' B grade (second round): Victoria College v. Trinity, on court 10. Last Saturday's Matches, There is little to comment on ill the A grade men's matches, which were played on Saturday. Thorndon, Wellington I> and Brougham Hill disposed of Lower Hutt, Victoria College, and Muritai respectively with plenty to spare. For Thorndon, Peacock showed his mettle, and Hawkins (Hutt) only won one game, and that in tlio doubles. After a good fight, Callender won from O. Prouse in threo sets, although ho only won 14 games to Prouse's 10. Kirk, irom the fi grade, who replaced Ward, gave Putnam a good game. Smytko was too strong for Cornell. In the fixture Wellington I v. College, the most noteworthy match was the defeat of Eller by. Smith, who won the only rubber for his side. Cleghorn also played up well against Salmond. Brougham Hill, wiOl a,weak fourth man, won from Muritai 'fairly comfortably. Lawrencc, from tho B grade, lost to Lewis in three sets, 13 games to 14; while Laishley and Lawrence fell rather badly to Naglo and Lewis in two sets, 12 games to 3. The other matches wero all in Brougham Hill's favour, Wright suffering most, losing 12 games to 2. After to-day there are only two matches to bo played in this grade, and so wo may well 1 nail Thorndon as winners. Play in the B Grade, . In the B grade, Petone is practically assured of the' leading position by its defeat of Brougham Hill 1. Parkinson lost to Sampson in. three sets, o—2, I—o, 2—o. If Sampson had played for "keeps" from the start, Brougham Hill would have won tho match. Duncan outplayed Marriner, and it is worth mentioning here that ho is considered'by many to be the strongest player in his grade., Austin is at tho top of his form, and his defeat of Dart in two sets shows him to be a much improved player. Townsend, taken from the Brougham Hill II team, won easily from Andrews; and, with Dart, won his double from Austin and Andrews. Samnson and Marriner wero not good enough for Parkinson and Duncan on the day's nlay. Brougham Hill 11, in its match with Victoria College, folt tho loss of Townsend, whose services were claimed by 'tho first team. Kcan, not in the best form, was played first man, and was beaten in two sets by Parker, who is very fit. Hurley lost his match with Taylor, going to three sots. Barton and Butcher won both ; their singles in two sots from .Rutherfurd i and Fair, Butcher showing himself Well - worthy of his place, although ,ho was sadly missed from his team in the lower grade. Victoria College II only won ono rubber from Trinity and. that was by Loughnan from Jacobsen in two sets. • Crowes, Correll, and Swinburne are showing themselves very ponsistent. Why , Not be Generous? i It is unfortunate that the Victoria Col- 1 lege management cannot assist tho asso- 1 ciation to get off its fixtures on their ' courts with more dispatch. It is said ! that it has been made a rule by the committee that only one court will bo allowed for a match, despite tho fact that Victoria College has nino .teams in tho various _ competitions. This, of courso, makes it very inconvenient for visiting ] teams. With only a few players using the remaining courts in 'a haphazard fashion, tho use of a court for a rubber : has been refused not only once, but re- ; peatedly to both men's and ladies' teams. It is to. be hoped that Victoria College 1 will assist opponents by occasionally giv- ' ing them an extra court.
