PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

_ The meeting of tho Petone Borough Council held last evening was attended by tho Mayor (Mr. J. W. MT3wan). Councillors Short, Hardins, Southgate, Brocklebi'ook, Piper, Trueman, Jones, and loung. „ Ti > e .secretary of tho Petone District High School. Committee wrote regarding forming an agricultural class at the High bchool. The writer asked if tho council would provide a piece of land suitablo and recommend tho formation of the class to the Education Board. The Mayor stated that ho had looked into tho matter, and found that there was a section of one and a half acres in Cuba Street which, ho thought, would answer the purpose. . There was also another suitablo section iu Heretaunga. Street. The council were divided in opinion as to whether they should accede to the request for a site. Councillor Piper moved against the proposal, but an amended motion, by Councillor Southgate, to the effect that particulars as' to the area of the land required be obtained and the engineer authorised to confer with the school committee to define a site, was carried. An application from an ice-cream vendor to be allowed to take up a stand in tho street provoked a discussion as to whether street hawkers should be coun-. tenanced. The application was granted, the stand to be fixed 'by tho council.
