AMATEUR ATHLETICS. t ' 5 ' THE'DOMINION COUNCIL. 0 The annual meeting of the Council oi S the Now Zealand Amateur Athletic Association ®ciation was hold last evening, Mr. A ' Marryatt presiding. Others present wer< \ Messrs. E. L. CUaifev, J. H. Pollock, F Ross, C. E. Bridge, J. F. Thompson, W " F. Larkin, and M. H. Oram. '' In moving tho adoption ot the reporl 1 (already published) and . balance-sheet i the president-(Mr. A. Marryatt) indicatcc ' the necessity of continued vgilance or tho part of the council in fostering ama y ' tour sport. The visit of Shrubu -anc Duffey some years ago had done a work ,° of good. Tho council, even if unable t< j" arrange a visit on similar lines during th< " ensuing year, should, if possible, lay th( ® groundwork of a scheme whereby a tean f of American or Enslish athletes shouk " again tour New Zealand. If during tin ' present year a visit could be secured fron o Messrs. Wheatlcy and Davis it would cer • tainly <lo good. Tlio matter of represen tation at tho Olympic Games, to bo hell s, at Stockholm in 1912, would como befon in tho council during the year. Anothe le matter to come up for consideration wouli be that of tho Australasian- champion o- ships, to be held in New Zealand in tli m latter part of 1911, or early in 1912. A an early date steps would liavo to b >u taken towards allocating tho meeting. In connection with sport generally, Mi .Marryatt stressed tho desirability of gel
ting .into touch with secondary schools and colleges throughout the Dominion. Mr. Pollock suggested, as an alternative to a visit by Messrs. Wheatlcy and Davis,'that Australian athletes attending tho Australasian Championship meeting in New Zealand might bo induced to visit other ccntres than that in which the meeting would bo held. Mr. Ross opposed tho proposal to invite a visit from Messrs. Wheatlcy aud Davis. • It would bo much better to bring in • athletes from England or, Canada. Tho report and balancc-shcct we're adopted. The whole of the retiring office-bearers were rc-elcctcd. They aro •.—'Messrs. A. Marryatt (Otago), president; E. L. Chaffey (Canterbury) and W. F. Larkin (Wellington), vice-presidents; C. D. Morpeth, hon. auditor; and W. G. -Talbot, hon. secretary and treasurer. Messrs. C. E. Bridgo and W. F. Larkin wero re-elected as a reinstatement subcommittee. ■ It was resolved that tho New Zealand Amateur Athlctic Championship meeting be allotted this year to Canterbury; Q ■ v
