PARLIAMENT.

THE COUNCIL. DENTISTS AMENDMENT BILL. The Legislative Council met at 2.30 yesterday afternoon, when the AttorneyGeneral presented a report covering the reasons of the Council for insisting on the amendments it had made in the Dentists Amendment Bill. The reasons given are that the amendment; are necessary to give finality to the special concession made to applicants. The report was adopted. EDUCATION RESERVES. A message was received from the House of Representatives agreeing to the amendments made by tho Council in the Education Reserves Amendment Bill; MR. HINE'S CHARGES. The Attorney-General, gave notice of his intention to move on next sitting day that the report of the Select Committee on tho Message (No. 49) from the House o£ Representatives relating to Mr. Hine's charges against the Hon. T. K. Macdonald be taken into consideration on Wednesday nest. BILLS FROM THE HOUSE. The Wellington Harbour Board Empowering Bill, Kaitieke County Bill, Wellington City Milk Supply Bill; and the Greymouth Harbour -Board Loans Consolidation Amendment Bill were received from the House of. Representatives, and read a first time. The Bills were all referred to tepecial committees, and the Council adjourned at 2.45 until S p.m., to enable the Bills to he reported on by tho committees. . ' A message was received later from the House of Representatives,, requesting a conference on the amendments made in the Bill. , On the motion of tho Attorney-General, it was decided to meet the managers of tho House at ten o'clock this morning. The Hons.. Br. Findlay, Dr. Collins, and W. C. Smith were appointed to represent the Council at the conference, i PUBLIC WORKS AMENDMENT. The Public Works Amendment Bill was received from the House of Representatives, aud was read a first time. The second reading was set down for to-day. PUBLIC HOLIDAYS. In Committee on the Publio Holidays Bill, the Attorney-General moved an alteration to prevent the combining of Empire Day with the Sovereign's birthday. Paragraph "D," which also refers to Empire Day, was deleted. Tho AttorneyGeneral said he understood that the matter of whether there should be an Empire Day at all was to be considered at tho Imperial Conference. If it was decided to have an. Empire Day, the necessary arrangements would be made later. In reply to. a question by the Hon. J. E. Jenkinson, the Attorney-General said the alteration would not have ariy effect on any existing awards. The Bill was reported with _ amendments, and was later read a third timo and passed. MUNICIPAL CORPORATIONS BILL. In Committee on the Municipal Corporations Bill, the Hon. J. B. Callan (Otago) moved a proviso to Section 10 (which provides for disqualifications) as under:—"Provided that a person shall not be disqualified from being elected and from being .a councillor or; mayor by reason only of his being a director of any newspaper company of not less than 20 members, in which paper any advertisements relating to tho affairs of the borough or council arc inserted." On a division the amendment was lost by 11 to G. The Bill was reported with amendments, and the third reading was set down for to-day. '.'.'...; THE LOCAL BILLS! '... Tho various local Bills received early in the day were reported from Committee with recommendations that they be allowed to proceed. -No amendments were mado in the Greymouth Harbour Board Loans Consolidation Bill, Wellington Harbour Board Empowering Bill, or the Kaitieke County Bill. The AVellington Milk Supply Bill was reported with amendments. . CITY MILK SUPPLY. The Wellington' Milk Supply Bill was discharged from tho Order Paper, and mado an, order of the day for this afternoon. The reason, tho Hon. Mr. Luke explained, was that a certain matter of detail had to bo considered.

GREYMOUTH HARBOUR. ; In moving the second reading of - the Greymouth Harbour Board Loan's Consolidation Amendment Bill, the AttorneyGeneral said the Bill was merely an amending BUI made necessary by an omission in drafting from- the Bill -to which it referred. It did not alter the intention of the original Bill. The second reading was agreed to, and the Bill will be takeii in Committee to-day. The Council rose at 10.45 p.m.
