» A TERRIBLE FALL. ACCIDENT ON KING'S 'WHARF. King's Wharf was the scene of a serious • accident yesterday morning. It appears that shortly after 11 o'clock, a man named Nicol Jamieson was employed at No. 3 shed-in tho Harbour Board carpenter's gang, controlled by Mr. A. Dolauey. The men wcro engaged in hoisting a heavy beam on to the top of the rafters, the beam being controlled at each side with a rope. Jamieson was seated on the beam trying to work it into position. During tho operation, the fore-- , man asked a tally-clerk, who understands tho working of the hydraulic pulley, to give a hoist, .but beforo ho could get to tho rope bv which it was worked, a carter, employed by O'Brien and Co., and another man, pulled the ropo , together. They pulled rather suddenly, and the beam shot up quickly, causing Jamieson to be unseated and thrown to the ground. In his fall, tho unfortunate man struck the side wall, : and then fell on to a bale of wool, finally lauding on a heap of hoop-iron on the floor. Had ho not como in contact with the bale of wool, it is ulmoH certain that he would have been killed, for ho fell from a height of 35ft., and the floor of the shed is <*f .concrete. As it was* his injuries wero very severe, and consisted of concussion of tho spine, a broken arm, and several broken ribs. Assistance, was rendered by members of the Harbour Board's Ambulance corps, and Dr. Henry was summoned. Tho injured man was then removed in the ambulance to tho Hospital by Mr. Jlunro, wharfinger, and the police. Inquiry last night elicited the fact that tho patient was still in a serious condition, but doing fairly well. He is a single man, 38 years of ago, and resides at Tainui Terrace, Jfaranui. At the inquest touching the death of William Bick'erstafF, who was ruii over in the station yard yesterday, tho coroner- returned a verdict that deceased was accidentally killed, no blame being attachable to anyone.
