KAWHIA'S TRADE WITH WELLINGTON.
Sir,—One Kawhia mcrchnnt lias bought in Wellinston. Ho now is the cheapest here, There is a oliance here for A/ullingtonians. All they have to do is to put 011 a Welliugton-Kawhia boat when iho trade will go to them. It is only about one small steamer cargo per week present, but will grow every year, aiul when nil Natives have. the right .to sell, their land and have their Crown grant at their lawyer's office this port will
produce immensely wool, mutton, fruit, wine, ctc. A ve9sel at the present time to do a steady trade here must hare an insulated, hold, and-a freezer. A?o have no freezer to absorb our fat lambs and wethers, which are increasing fast. When no cargo going from here to Wellington is available, let them carry a trawlnet'and fill the hold with fish for shipment to Britain or for local consumption. Our southern produce now goes from the south to Auckland, via Bast Coast. We pay Cs. per ton, Auckland to Onehunga, which also is a big profit to Auckland's middlemen. With a direct service from Wellington we could buy southern produce for delivery, per U.S.S. Company's boats, to Wellington. The chauee .is here, who will reach out and take it ? An auxiliary gas engine schooner would do for a start, and could be run cheaper 'than a steamer—l am, SOUTHERN PIONEER, :
