« 1 ■ ANNUAL MEETING. The-annual meeting of the Maori Association was held at tho Sydney Street Schoolroom on Thursday evening, Mr. Whatanui (of the tfrewera Country) presiding. . . Tho annual report and balance-sheet were read and adopted. ' 1 Officers for' tho ensuing year were elected as follow: —President, Mr. Pepene Eketone (Waikato); vice-presi-dents, one from each tribe, about 100 in: all; secretary,' Mr. C. R. Parata (Wellington, re-eleoted); treasurer, Mr. Charles Jury (Wairarapa); management committee, the president, secretary and treasurer ' (ex-officio), and Messrs. Taitoko Mataitana (Oroua Bridge), Takana Ilangimauriora (Daimevirko), Teira Ihakara (Paraparaumu), and Patara Peeiie (Porirua). Tho foregoing were also constituted a Parliamentary committee to watch tho progress of legislation affecting ' Maoris. In previous years tbo management- committer has consisted of twenty-four members, but, this year, it was decided the number to seven, this, number being found more convenient for obtaining 'a quorum.

The annual subscription was fixed at 10s. per member. j .The newly-elected president, 011 tak!ih{* tho chair, thanked members for .the ihonour conferred on him, and pointed out to members and. visiting Natives .'the benefit of a united Maori Association: (1) because such an association ' enabled'.them ; to bring Native matters in- more concise form beforo Parliament;® it obviated . certain ■-difficulties which were liable to arise when tribes acted independently; (3) it would enable Europeans and also tlio. Government to transact Native business without, having .to go round-inviting tho separate opinions of tho Maori tribes, thus saving both timo and expense to tho country. lastly, tho association would endeavour to bring about a better understanding between the two races, and,' when this, was properly _and generally -understood, Europeans would 110 doubt offer to assist. •
