PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.
A.MYSTERIOUS OCCURRENCE. (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Palmerston, November 4. ; A bolt in Cuba Street this morning, while the street was full of. vehicles and people going to the show, caused some excitement. It seems that one of a pair of horses, which was being harnessed to a four-wheeled- cab, was startled, got away' with the vehicle, and raced along the street. There were many close calls from collision, but, fortunately, the horso kept a straight course until near tho entrance to tho show grounds, where it went to one side, and raced between tho korbihg of the .footpath and a fenco round a tree in tho roadway, 'which it struck. Tho force of the collision broke the bolt fastening the pole to tho vehicle, and tho animal got away with tlio polo only. Tlio cab remained 011 its wheels, and was littio damaged. Considering tho traffic in the street at tlio time, it is a wonder that a serious accident did not happen. 1 A woman named Mrs. , Lunan, formerly restaurant keeper here, was found lying in an unconscious state at tho rear of a stable in David Street at an early hour this morning. Medical examination showed that she was suffering from a fractured, skull, and she was taken to tho hospital. How she camo by her injuries is quite a mystery. Mr. Lunan left Palmerston for Taihape some time ago, and-it is presumed that she was on a visit to the show. Mr. Taylor, who was precipitated in his motor-car over the bank 1 of tlio Manawatu Gorge, and received serious injures, is progressing as well as possible in tho Palmerston Hospital. A meeting of the New Zealand Friesian Association was held to-day, tho president (Mr. Coleman Phillips) presiding over a large attendance, there being representatives from as far away as tho Auckland and Otago districts. Nine new- members wero elected, .and the names of Messrs. AV. James (Taranaki), I. H. M'Nair (Matamata), A. H. Steel (Bell Block), E. Buckeridgc (Wairarapa), George Aitcheson (Kaitangata), G. H. Gilling (Matapu), and 0. M. O'Connor (Linton) wore added to tho committee. It was decided that entries for tho first volume of the llolstein Freisian Herd Book should close on March 31, 1911.
