FOOTBALL.

NEW ZEALAND RUGBY UNION. ANOTHER MAORI TOUR MOOTED. BUT NOT APPROVED.. The Management Committee of the New Zealand Rugby Union met last evening. Thero \vere present: Messrs. G. Dixon (chairman), Crombie, Kelly, Wallburton, and Isaacs. Tho Marlborough Rugby Union forwarded tho following resolution: "That ■ tho Marlborough Union is of opinion tho time has arrived whon the Buller. West Coast, Nelson, and Marlborougli Unions should have a representative as ono of the selectors of the South Island team, and this union would ask tho New Zealand Union to rearrange tho selectors and arrange'for ono to represent tho four unions named." Tho application was .referred to 1 the incoming committee. . Tho Auckland Rugby Union wroto in reference to a match with Hawke's Bay, played at Auckland during last season. The Auckland Union regarded the match as an ordinary challenge game. No notification as to its being a special challenge match had been received until some weeks after it was played, when tho Hawke's Bay Union wroto asking for a cheque. Consideration was held over, pending receipt of a statement from Hawke's Bay. Mr. T. A. Graco wroto enclosing a letter from the New South Wales Rugby Union, regarding a proposal by him for a tour of Australia in 1911, by a team of footballers composed of old scholars of Te Auto College, Hawke's Bay. Tho team, Mr. Grace 'stated, would consist of about 22 players. Four or five weeks would bo spent in Australia. Tho total cost of tho tour was estimated at £1000. This was only a guess at tho amount. The organisers of the tour would like a guaranteo of £800 and would accept fiO per cent proceeds of matches. Anything made out of the tour would be given to the "To Auto Collcgo Association," for charity in aid of tho Hakarero Maori Girls' School (destroyed by fire at Napier). The team would bo all Maoris and would be called "The Te Auto College Old Boys' Football Club." Failing support by the union, tho team would act as it thought best. The letter of the Now South Wales Rugby Union, addressed to Mr. Grace, simply asked him to lay tho proposal for the tour befor'o tho New Zealand Rugby Union. "Getting too strong," and "there has been rather, too much of this sort of thing," wero comments passed by members. ASSOCIATION. REFEREES' ASSOCIATION. A meeting of the New Zealand Referees' Association ("soccer" game) was held last night,- Mr. W. Monckton presiding. Thero wore also present Messrs. Fordham, Wells, Mayor, and Salmon. Replies wero received from affiliated referees' associations agreeing to making the matter of badges a universal ono throughout tho Dominion. Tho matter was left in the. hands of Mr. Mayer. 1 Tho secretary of the Otago Referees' Association wrote stating that his association had been reformed, and that it was on a much better footing than formerly. Tho New Zealand Football Association forwarded a copy of a letter received from the Wellington Football Association stating that a slight misunderstanding had occurred in connection with tho recent boys', representative match in Otago, and suggesting that all future appointments bo made by tlie N.Z.R.A. It was decided to advise all associations that the referees for all future representative matches would-be appointed by the N.Z.R.A. Notice was received of tho disqualification of a Wellington refereo for misconduct. A previous resolution, appointing a sub-committee to revise tho rules, was referred to by the chairman, "'bo thought that it was better t-o havo tho alterations discussed by a full meeting. It was eventually decided, to meet in a fortnight's time, and go into the proposed new constitution and by-laws. Tho chairman also mentioned that he was strongly 6f opinion that, when a player was reported for misconduct, etc., the onus of clearing himself should be on tho player, and the refereo should not have to bo placed in the undignified position' of having to provo his charges, and undergo a cross-examina-tion. ■ This was. belittling his position as an . official. Tho. London authorities adopted his view, and he hoped that it could be carried out here, as it would considerably strengthen the position and standing of referees. It was decided that, when the now rules are being discussed, a standard method of examination be. adopted foi the ',whole of the Dominion.

At a meeting of the Otago Centro of the Athletic Union to-night it was decided to inquire the reason why tho Now Zealand Executive had submitted proposals for-amalgamation:,to the Now Zealand Leaguo of Wheelmen without consulting the contrcs in tho face of a decision arrived at at the annual co).ference;that tho union should take over the control of cycling. Inquiry is also to 'be made as to why tho executive adopted rules for tho control of cycling without referring tho matter to tho centres. A complaint was further made that no rules had been submitted to the centres for the control of the Sheffield Handicap.
