THE LATE PROFESSOR GOLDWIN SMITH.
On the front of the house in which Professor Golclwin Smith -was bora in Beading, an identification stone has been * placed. "It wai unveiled," says a correspondent of the "British Weekly," '%t ail impressive little ceremony. The house is No. 15, 'frier Street, not far from the Town Hall and St. Lawrence' 3 Church. It is a building of three stories, and of perhaps, forty_ feet frontage. Of the'plain but dignified- Georgian period, the "red-brick front, abutting directly on to tho pavement, seems to hide precisely the kind of home in which one might have expected the professor to have been born. Tho house is now partly used by the Christian Scientists, who keep open a xeadxng-rooan thore; other occupants are a-doctor of medicine, a dentist, , and business inon who use so>n;e; of the rooms as offices, The tablet, is of a warm-tinted stone, placed about tho level of the eye. The lettering is of a neat block character, filled in' with' lead. Following are the words: 'This house 'was the birthplaco of Professor Goldwin Smith, D.C.L. Born August 20, 182-1.
