One of tho results of tho Geneva Convention signed by the leading Powers in 1864 was the formation of tho Red Cross Society, whoso function it is to succour the wounded in battle, to secure the neutrality of nurses, hospitals, etc.,' and to relieve suffering occasioned by pestilence, floods, fires, and other calamities.
