SERIOUS SMASH ON HUTT ROAD.

LOADED DRAG HITS TELEGRAPH pole. ■ ' .'■/ A rather serious accident occurred on the Hutt Road, about a quarter of a : mile to- the : north of . the Kaiwarra I railway station at about 8.30 last evening. It appears that one of Lyon's drags, conveying a picnic party homo from the Hutt, while proceeding along at an ordinary pace,; collided somewhat violently with a telegraph post on the harbour side o£ the road, The shock frightened the horses, which broko away after overturning the drag and: throwing its occupants on the road. At it \vas quite dark a scene of some confusion arose.'The ladies of . the party, were naturally much alarmed. Some shrieked, and one is said to have fainted. ■ ' ! , • • •

The most seriously-injured of the party waa a young man l named George Ewart, a single man, 20 years of-igo, residing at 110 Hill . .Street, and ' employed in the Government Printing Office. He had the misfortune to be thrown heavily on to the road, sustaining a fracture 'of the left log. One of the ladies of -the party sustained- a 'sprained wrist, and others wore badly hruised, and suffered a good deal from shock. '
