LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The weekly English and Australian mails, which ordinarily arrive in Wellington by Main Trunk express from Auckland on Monday afternoon, • will this week arrive .one day' later than usual. Last evening a telegram was received at the local Post Office from the Chief Postmaster at Auckland, stating that/ the Wostralia, which has mails aboard from England, via Suoz, and from Australia, would not berth at Auckland in time to connect with the Main Trunk express, which arrives in Wellington this afternoon. The Wellington and southern portion of the mails will, therefore,, arrivo in Wellington, as stated, to-morrow afternoon. ■'
There was trouble on the Corinthic shortly before 6 p.m. on Saturday. A fireman who had been ashore returned to the ship under the influence of liquor, and demanded some money, which he alleged was owing him. On this being refused tho fireman, who was in a refractory mood, obtained possession of a marlihc-spike, with which it is alleged that ho threatened tho second officer., Fearing trouble the officer produced a revolver, at the sight of which the assailant's truculcnce ovaporatod. Ho was handed over to the police, and will bo charged with common assault beforo tho stipendiary magistrate this morning. Tho usual mooting of the Wellington Brotherhood was held .it tho ■ King's Theatro yesterday afternoon, Mr. Kershaw presiding.\ Tho Rev. K P. Blamires spoke on "Korea," laying stress 011 the great blessings that have-re-sulted from the spread of Christianity in thut country.
Mr, S. Stidolph, secretary of the Now Zealand Veterans' Association, has received tho following letter from Lord Islington's private secretary Sir,—l, —l am directed by his Excellency tho Governor to inform you that he is in receipt of a dispatch, dated September 7, from the Secretary of State for the Colonies stating that his Majesty tho King has been graciously pleased to become patron of tho Royal' New Zealand Association of His Majesty's Veterans. I have the honour to be, sir, your obedient servant, R. Kerr Clark, private secretary."
Tho Potono Garrison Artillery wero "at home" at Fort Kelburno yesterday afternoon, when they entertained tho families and friends of tho men, to the number of about 500. A display of drill was given by tho corps, ono of tho guns was run out, and demonstrations wero given with tho tubes. Tho l'etone Brass Band, under Lieutenant Herd, played selections, and the mouth organ band of the company also helped to enliven tho proceedings. The visitors partook of afternoon tea, and seemed to bo keenly interested in the. drill, the guns, and everything that was shown them. Captain Bevan and all the officers of the corps were present.
Tho draw for tho fourth round under the auspices of the' Wellington Debating Societies Union took place at a meet-, ing held on Saturday eveningj and resulted as follows Vivian Street Baptist Society v. Catholic Club,, at . the latter's rooms, October 31: St. Hilda's v. Victoria College, at Island Bay, on November 1. The subject is: "That the autonomous system of government possessed by the British overseas Dominions should be. extended to Ireland."
The Court of Appeal will sit'at 10.30 this morning, when an application will be made for final leave to appeal to the Privy Council in the Daunevirke will case "of Allardieo v. Allardice. Banco sittings will be hold.by Mr. Justice Cooper, at 2.15 p.m,, and Mr. Justice' Chapman, at 10.30 a.m. !
