BAND CONTEST. SOLOS AND QUARTET. Dunedln, October i&. The band contest was continued this "' morning. ■ Results:— Soprano cornets.—C. Moore. Dunedm Citizens', 48, 1; A. Hoskin, Ashburton, 46, 2; W. Thomas, Morningten. and T. Dix, Lyttolton, equal, 45, 3. Flugel. horns—T. M'Loan, Moruington, 49, 1; J. Curric, Kaikorai, 48, 2: 11. Ncemau, Kaikoiai, 46, 3. In tho quartet competition eleven teams competed. No. 1 team from Woolston (R. J. Estell, C. D. Dunn, R. Baiber, and 6. Wilson) scored the maximum number of points, and came first. The quartet representing the Lyttelton Marine Band (H. Fox, A. Griffiths, L. Wendleborn, and W. J. • Sullivan) and No. 1 quartet from Kaikorai (E. Kerr, G. Laidlaw, D. Whelan, and J. A. O'Brien) each scored 49 points, and were awarded second place. The following bands were also lepresented:—Mormngton (two • teams), . bouth Canterbury Battalion, Dunediu Citizens', Woolston, and Kaikorai No. 2 teams. The scoring was, in nearly every instance, remarkably high, the judge stating that he had had some difficulty in separating some of the contestants. .A garden paity was held in the afternoon. £200 CONE; ASTRAY. MEN-'S WAGES SENT BY MAIL. Auckland, October 18. Yesterday morning some £200 wag sent by mail in notes to pay the wagea • of the men employed in the Taountain ' King and Handsworth mines at Kuatunu. News was received to-day to the effect that the money was missing, and wires have been dispatched to the manager for further particulars.
