MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.

The'monthlj; meeting of the'Manawatu County Council was held this week. Present: Councillors J. G. Wilson (chairman), R. B. M'Kenzie, T. Masters, W. Barber, and J. Henson. ' . ■Mr." E. ■ Newman, M.P., ;\Toto regretting that the reply of the Minister for Public Works re a grant towards raising the: road between Glen Oroua arid Oroua Bridge was unfavourable. The Minister, in his communication to Mr. Newman, said- that' the District Engineer, had reported that tho cost, would be '£3M6. The road in question, is. through the■ Oroua Downs Estate, of which tho CTOvernment only acquired one of the subdivisions (the Mangawhata Estate). This was a prosperous settlement. Although flood waters lie on the road, for a few days in the year, it did not appear that tho tenants suffered, any hardship, and, while raising tho road was a desirable- undertaking, it did not seem of. sufficient urgency to warrant the expenditure of snch a large sum.
