Since she commenced'racing , as a h v 'o-year-old Gipsy Belle has .been' improving? every .season, and '■ the .manner/.in which she finished yesterday , suggests that.she may be. better , /than..ever -this season. . ■Scarcely anything .but Howler was inoiuired 'for in .the Maiden Hurdles, and the Sou'-wester .gelding ' was favourito from the 'commencement:of; the betting, operations .until the close. -W. Young was in'the saddle,' and.ho.got his mount smartly, away,'', but; the. third' , ' hurdle, brought the. favourite : to'■-. grief,.. and Makiri came..down over-him. This-left' the second, favourite, Himitangi, to'win very, easilj 'from Pakau, who is appar-: ently not of' much' account. A similar remark applies to Howler, who is a very indiiferent. jumper, and .would probably 'have been beaten by Himitangi, even.had he stood np. That the hurdles, are. not very .difficult to,; negotiate at_ : .Otaki was clearly demonstrated in' this ■ race, when two of the fences were knocked, flat., In the other hurdle:race, also, 7 one of tho : jumps was knocked to the ground, when the horses rapped it;. , :, . :.. Yet another favourites was beaten in the Tβ. Hiwi; Stakes when Mallet ran badly, and finished out of a/place.. The soft going just suited Notorious, who went.!to the front at. the fall.of the'flag,' and ; led throughout. Two, members of F. J. Carmbnt's Xevin-team, Teotane and Torpoint, filled the ■places."... The, lastnamed appears to be very well, and' he should be-benefited by.' the race.: ■- Wild Bird: raced, well' for sis furlongs, but tired to. Sir Antrim and Miss Advance were the only withdrawals from the Labour Day Handicap: The eleven runners-were the subject of close scrutiny in the birdcage, and-during, tueir preliminary gallops. Golden Loop and Llanwern were certainly the pick- of the .field so fnr as condition went, and the_ former was made a slightly better favourite than Llanwern and Sir Frisco. ' The last-named' moved even more scratchily than usual, and did not look so robust as formerly. The. start' was not a perfect one, and St. Felix and Ambrosian appeared to. get the.best of it. Before the field had gone very far, Llan-" wern was seen to ,1m among the leaders, and,-it was at- once apparent that this beautifully-bred little iiorso was going far betler t than any of his opponents. He .was in front before the straight was reached, and won with a 'lot > .to spare. Astraea, ■who'was badly placed in the early.stages, cnine with a strong finish and cut St. Felix out of second place. Royal Marine, who 'bolted onco round before the start, had. tho further misfortimo to get badly away, but.finished fourth. Golden Loop was evidently not at home in the going.

■Tho Hack Hnrdles was tho best bet of tho day, for To Ru, who led throughout, won with ridiculous ease. Considering that there were only four starters tho Birkenhead gelding paid a really good price. MaMri, who fell in the Maiden. Hurdle Raco, was among the starters and finished second to To Ru. . . ' In the Stewards' Hack Handicap, Master Sylvia was favourito and Rongomai nest in demand, while Turna, with Jenkins up, was only third favourite. Master Sylvia led in tho early stages, .but at the finish was beaten by both Turna and .Rongomai. ' Turna,' who is a .fullbrother to King Log, won quite comfortably and is a really good mover in soft going. . '':■-■ Backers had not been having a good time during the day, but the biggest surprise camo ill' the Inst race when; tho absolute outsider of the field was tho first to pass the judge's box. -This was Highden, who came along with a great dash in the straight, just' as Captain Bell had disposed of Tho Native and appeared to have the race won-
